MHD and XHP stopped being able to connect to car out of the blue

I've been using the same OBD2 --> USB cable for about 3 years without issues. I haven't done any logging or flashing in a few months and just tried to connect to my car with MHD and XHP and neither will connect. When I attempt to connect the red light on the cable blinks a few times and only blinks green for a fraction of a second. Then the apps tell me they can't connect.

My phone (Samsung Galaxy S7) has had some updates since the last time I successfully connected but that's the only variable I can think of.

I know usually the cable is the culprit in these situations, but here is what I've tried and keep getting the same results

    - Bought a new cheap ebay cable but it had good reviews and tried that. Is it possible my old cable "crapped out" and the new one is bad?
    - Tried a new OTG adapter cable
    - Broke out an old LG G2 android phone and got the same behavior with that phone (it is OTG capable)
    - Have tried connecting with ignition on with both the engine running and not running
    - Have waited about a minute after plugging cables into OBD2 port (after solid red light turns off) to try and connect
    - wiped data and cache from MHD on both phones.
    - uninstalled and re-installed MHD on both phones
    - Did a full factory data reset on my Galaxy S7
    - I have a basic OBD2 code scanner and that connects fine to my car
    - I just had my car coincidentally inspected about a week ago and they had no problems connecting to my car

    I'm stumped - Any suggestions?

No idea. Maybe @martial@mhd has a suggestion.

Since you tried new cables who knows.... try a new phone?

Strange that a code scanner works and not anything else.

I think standard code scanners operate on different protocols and use a different pin on the OBD2 connector. Maybe check the pins on the cables and also on female end in the car. If MHD and xHP can't connect then it sounds like the KLINE pins 7 and 8 are damaged.

Also could be that the new cheap eBay cable doesn't support K+DCAN.

I've noticed that sometimes I have to hold the plug end to the phone so that it will stay stable in order to connect to MHD. So one hand holds the phone and the other hold the cable that plugs to the phone as if you plug it in and let it go but don't let it go...just hold it in so it stays stable so to speak.

    Good luck!

Maybe try the bms cable? I think it's from China too though, but since bms offers a lifetime warranty I think it must be good since they're willing to stand behind it.

I've only seen good stuff about bimmergeeks. Who runs that?

Yeh Bimmergeeks cable is worth it's weight in gold for doing any serious coding.

I was reluctant to buy another cable since I already had a fully functioning cable-shack one but that bimmergeeks cable makes every single read and write operation in MHD 2x faster. It also makes ISTA/WinKFP 2x as a fast and allows you to code modules that normal cables like the cable-shack and BMS cable can't touch!

No, you sound like someone happy with their purchase. It seems like it is a very high quality cable from what I've read.

It was the cable! The bimmergeeks cable is $45. I found a coupon code - think it knocked $5 off. Cable works perfectly. Lesson: Ebay cables sometimes don't work out of the box or can fail even after working for a few years.

    Lesson learned.

Can't believe how cable sensitive a lot of this stuff is. Swap the cable and all of a sudden everything works.

Also goes to show how hard it is go get software working with all the cables out there.
