    • TBT: When BMW had the balls to stick a McLaren F1 V12 in an E53 X5 SUV and go Nurburgring hunting - X5 Le Mans

BMW used to do some pretty cool stuff. Like one day when someone at BMW said, 'Hey why don't we stick the McLaren F1 motor in an X5 and see how fast it will go around the Nurburgring with weight pulled a tweaked suspension?'

That idea gave birth to the BMW X LeMans which utilized the S70/2 or S70/3 V12 motor. Both being similar but the S70/2 was built for the McLaren F1 and the S70/3 for the BMW 23 Hours of Le Mans winning V12 LMR race car.

Either way the 6.0 liter naturally aspirated V12 made 700 horsepower and 531 lb-ft of torque.

BMW lowered the car by over an inch and gave it a race inspired suspension. They also got the balance of the SUV 51/49 front to back. 315/35/20 tires and wheels were utilized at all four corners.

This resulted in a 7:59 laptime over 18 years ago. For context, the same a 2005 SRT-10 Viper, C6 Corvette Z51, and Porsche 996 Carrera S.

What would it do on modern rubber and the modern Nurburgring? It would be fun to find out. The current SUV record holder is the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio at 7:51.7.

They also made a fully carbon fiber 4.6IS - unibody and all.

Wonder what hte Le Mans would do around the ring unchanged with the entire thing made out of carbon

The reason they chose the LeMans engine is pretty amazing, the transmission couldnt take the rpm’s of the F1 engine.

        No the V10 was sequential.

Edit: the X5 Le Mans had a normal getrag manual transmission.

Edit 2: By F1 i meant Formula 1 V10 engine i think you got it confused with McLaren F1.
