    • Not so fast - Tesla claims Laguna Seca 4-door production lap record with 'Plaid' tri-motor drivetrain Model S

A 1:36.55 laptime at Laguna Seca would technically be a new four-door production car lap record. What we have here though is a prototype with a new drivetrain in a Model S. The 'Plaid' setup apparently consists of three motors and more battery capacity.

Who knows what Tesla really did to it but it does handle and move quite well. It is interesting to see Tesla vie for lap records instead of acceleration short times for once.

Now, this is a far cry to what Porsche accomplished with the Taycan on the Nurburgring. For one, the Taycan is production ready and what Tesla is posting is from a prototype.

It is also much easier to do a lap of Laguna Seca which is much shorter than the Nurburgring.

This may be how Tesla responds to the Taycan and maybe the Model S will be taken seriously on the track. That is, if it can do more than a couple laps:

From what I've seen on their 'ring prototype car they are doing relatively simple mods. Wide fenders, wider tires (Pilot Sport Cup 2 Rs), lowered ride, aero (front skirt and rear bill). Combined with more power I can how this would make a fast car. Really that recipe could shave seconds off any car. I'm sure if the Alfa Guila or Panamera Turbo S was thrown on some wide Cup 2 Rs and given a sporty suspension set up it would crush the lap record.
