    VTT Shotgun Review

So a lot of you guys are asking or cant find a review so here goes.

I'm highly critical of products that don't measure up and got into many heated debates
and been locked out of threads because I step on a few to many toes.

But I know also to give credit where its due.

So a some came to me with a white box and upon opening it up I sighed, behold a shotgun kit which he wanted me to install and do a review on.

Install was a breeze and it took a few hrs but I was really taking my time to make sure it fit properly.

Looking at the fuel line kit and associated fittings I laughed and they where tossed in the bin promptly. I installed one of my upgraded lines and extended the lpfp sensor harness as it was too short.

The water lines where tossed as well as I had made a much simpler better quality setup, but really there was nothing wrong with it just that it wasn't up to my standard.

So really the only thing I kept is the bracket, bolts, drive kit and the parker fuel line.

Investigating the fuel line as i known for these to fail in the past, I found that the line is only rated fair for e85 and not rated for unleaded at all by parker them selves.

So with a bit more investigation there is no better hose on the market available as of yet rated at 6000 psi working pressure but also a massive overkill for our cars but no such thing in my book.

Since he only wants to run 98 I was a little hesitant to install this line, but he said he will indemnify me of any responsibility if it fails and it will be all on him.

Fine so we fire up the beast using the relocated original pump and we start hearing grinding and ticking noises. WTF.

I quickly shut the car down and begin to investigate.

Everything looks good nothing is rubbing, WTF ?

We restart the car and we get a ticking whiring noise and occasional grind.

Get the stethoscope out and start poking around, Viola the HPFP pump is ready for the
parts bin in the sky. $#@! this is no good.

All off a sudden it stops making noise and its all good.

We go for a relaxed drive around the block and it all seems good but we know the pump is not long for this earth.

Retune the car on the dyno and all seems good.

In less than a week I get a call the noise is back, not wanting to drive the car I tow it back to my shed and in mean time I already ordered a new pump just in case the old one failed which it did.

    Not a good sign.

I install the new pump and she runs like a purring kitten.

We retune the car and things are looking even better from a HPFP pressure side of things.

So his pump wasn't good in the first place.

Now the pump has been running for over 3 months with no issues and the only thing that has worried me seems to be holding up fine.

I'll give credit to Tony it seems he got it right now and things are looking good.

I would post some pics but there is much to see as its all under the car.

Seems fitting Bimmerboost is the only place you will find the one review of the shotgun working.

I am very interested in the single shotgun. Upon reading the DIY and seeing the coolant and fuel lines I promptly said F-no. Since you clearly agree with that, would you mind sharing what you made as replacement lines?

    Yep no problem

The fuel line is in this post

    http://www.bimmerboost.com/showthrea...hpfp+fuel+line

The water line i replaced the complete bottom plastic line with a gates hose so i don't have to run a bastardized line with multiple connections and now only runs two.

Awesome - glad to finally see one in use and working properly. Was the log from a hybrid turbo setup? No concerns right at redline where it dropped to 1050psi?

Well finally ! No suprise there, spining the pump faster will increase it's pumping capability.
It would be interesting to see how long the pump lasts.

No concerns with the pump dipping this is after a trim/pump adaptations reset with the new pump

The pump has gotten a lot better once it had time to adjust

I will be keeping a close eye on the longevity of the pump, he has the latest and greatest pump from BMW.

BTW that log is after a full reset of the adaptations as we where trying a new flash on his car just recently.

The original one is somewhere buried in the hundreds of logs

Dang. I don't want port injection but I'm definately not getting involved with this nonsense.
So I guess I'm waiting for a proper hpfp upgrade.

Don't you already have port injection? So what's the problem?

I was very skeptical in the first place too and the first pump failed upon startup

But it was 5 years old, since replacing it, he had no issues and is working flawlessy

If i had to do it all again i would have never fitted port injection

You have three full proof choices to you only with no side effects or possible hyperleans stay on a stock pump, go single or double barrel setup

Or wait for me to keep you guys updated how long the pump lasts but that will take a long time as i cant see it failing anytime soon

Damn man i'm really hesitating on that tho, 550whp straight E85 DI only would be super nice...
On top of that my subframe is already out...

Seriously a 30 min job max with the frame out.
The way the car drives now with the pi disabled and getting all its fuel from di
is like night and day difference for the better.

*I made a datazap of your log* http://datazap.me/u/bigdaddyaaron/sh...data=1-4-10-24

Im not sure how the jb4's unit of measure for HPFP pressure translates to psi, but I do see a pretty bad dip in the 6600-7000 RPM range; any reason why?

it had a full trim and adaptations reset and it takes awhile for everything to relearn

But the car never sees that rev range on the street as there is no power up there
plus he doesn't like revving the car that high

up to 6600 rpm the fuel pressure is solid 12 on 98 with a single barrel, with a double you would see 15 at least or higher if we tweak the tune.

Might see if I can convince him to get the double barrel setup.

Oh dang I totally missed that when you mentioned it earlier, my bad lol.

But there is definitely power to be had up top. aren't you single turbo?

This is my mates car I've built for him, I'm doing a big gtx3584rs atm for another mate, my car has been sitting in the garage getting a lot of tlc getting ready for the next WTAC and the unveil of all the new mods and showcasing some of the new products that are out or coming out in the future from the local shops.

Definitely power to had up top but not from his tiny stage 2 turbos

I have a temporary port injection meth setup yes, until I can get more fuel in a way I'm happy with. I don't want to use a petrol\E85 PI setup. I'd rather have something like this shotgun option to drive all the fuel required through DI. I like the water/meth for cooling but I'd worry about a lean condition with gasoline should the car misfire alot.

Get a bigger fmic, double barrel and e85 and say good bye to meth and pi

Just make sure your hpfp is healthy.

I still use my pi to keep me valves clean

In installed mine too in the Z4. It took me 1 week though since its not listed for Z4. The pump is installed in the way of charge pipe, and for making a new CP i had to make new fmic outlet, new oil and coolant lines and completely redesign the climate control pipings. Im spektical about the fuel line because its sitting just 12mm away from the steering shaft. Other than that its working ok for the moment. Waiting for a few things to get it retuned.

Its a doddle for RHD. Very little in the way of a straight forward connection.

Problem is I love meth. Very high octane. Can burn way more of it than gasoline or ethanol and all the chemical cooling! Plus water for antiknock and yet more cooling. I love it. There are a lot of reactions that use water as a catalyst as well it is believed.
