E89 Z4 Vargas GC Build thread!

Last thread didn't work out with Google Drive photos past about 30min LOL. So here we go again!

Hello all, yes I'm the lucky guy that got a set of GCs for free and I'm here to share my experiences with them with all of you!

As you know, the vehicle these turbos are going on is a 2009 Z4 sDrive35i. This model has DCT and the executive ivory leather trim. My woman drives this nearly everyday for work and for a while it was setup with DCIs and a JB4, then had a MHD-based backend flash added. At some point I traded the JB4 for a set of BC coilovers that never made it onto any car as I went with a special buy of Ohlins R&T on my E90 instead. As part of this package, I also bought a set of VTT inlets/outlets since they are properly matched and it's just a very convenient time to install them.

So it's now mostly stock with a basic tune via MHD and DCIs. Car has super low miles and has never had any problems like oil leaks, smoke, etc. I've maintained it quite well!

So the other day this heavy-ass box showed up. I ended up opening it to figure out what the hell this was all about.

Tony and Chris, these things are gorgeous! Can't wait to install them.

Install progress is ongoing and I'll be posting an update in just a moment.

So Saturday bright and early, I began working on the car in earnest. Afternoons are extremely hot and humid down here in Melbourne, FL and I've got no ventilation/air moving in my garage. So it usually ends up being 3-4 hours of work in the mornings.

First step was to move the car over to where my E90 sits, jacking the car up a bit, and pulling parts!

Here I've got the engine covers off, vacuum canisters, solenoids, and heatshields propped up on the motor out of the way. Front coolant pipe was opened to get the coolant out. Oil is also drained!

Fan shroud off (a bit more work than my MT E90, but not too bad).

Looks like I'll be doing a bit of cleaning! But not too bad at all!

You can see here the amount of room in the rear the Z4 engine bay affords. It's quite nice after doing a ST swap on an E90!

Side access is also quite nice when the heatshield is removed.

And now the engine brace is installed so I can begin dropping the subframe!

Another update to catch everything up!

I'm not going to remove the subframe, just going to drop it. Being aluminum, it just doesn't weigh very much and I found it being dropped allowed plenty of room on my E90 when doing the oil pan gasket, and now the E89 is no exception. I was worried the electric power steering rack would be a problem, but I've got it tucked out of the way and should have no access issues.

The waterpump is now out! I went ahead and pulled the inlet pipes as well. No cutting, bending, or any weird tricks was ever needed. Unbolted the two hex bolts holding them to the block, maneuvered them around a bit, and out they came!

Downpipes are next, then all the lines for the turbos! Shaping up to be straight-forward. I'm about 6 hours in total time including 10min breaks every 45-60min due to the heat and going at a very moderate pace (including adult beverages).

I did this job on my Z4 if you need any help. Lot's of room on the Z4 and it is pretty straight forward. No need to completely remove the subframe like you mentioned, just drop it and let it hang.

Most poeple replace them actually because you're already in there. But yes, the waterpump blocks access to the front part of the front turbo, making it hard to get at the coolant supply line. Pulling the waterpump is easy once the subframe is hanging. A few hoses and 3 bolts. I didn't even remove the tstat, just pulled the back hoses, disconnected its mounting bolts and tied it out of the way.

    Update

As some of you may know, I got the E90 dynoed over the weekend to cap-off the build for now. Made 746whp at 32psi with a few issues regarding the dyno facility and operator. Going to be placing that on the backburner until November when the temps come down.

Over the weekend (after watching Alabama utterly destroy USC), I got the turbos removed and moved all the oil/water lines over to the new units. Tony supplied a new coolant supply hose for the rear turbo as the wastegate orientation on the GCs is in a different position than the rear Z4 turbo.

After comparing things side by side; you can easily see why the GCs flow so much more air than the OEM units. The biggest difference IMO is on the exhaust side, but the front wheel is also much larger. Can't wait to get this car running Click here to enlarge As promised I've provided some side by side shots and the hot-side shot is going to make your jaw drop regarding the size difference.

You can see here that the oem exhaust manifold has a very small pinch point into the turbine inlet; a major restriction when trying to produce large amounts of power. Hard to get around that on stock-framed hybrids, but the GCs are a custom two-piece cast manifold and turbine housing. The pinch point is eliminated and the flow path itself is much larger

Here's the compressor side by side. Notice the much larger inlet, outlet, and compressor wheel.

This is my favorite photo and I apologize for the blurryness, the incoming light wasn't that great. But the size difference is remarkable!

And here's the GCs all dressed for success. I hope to have these installed with the lines, downpipes, inlets, and outlets by Sunday.

Not a whole lot of time to work on this until the weekend. These next two months are going to be extremely tight schedule wise; so I'm busting my ass to get these done. Hope everyone is enjoying the pics Click here to enlarge

Looks real good. Question: Are the GCs 'stock frame' on the exhaust side? Asking because it looks like the turbine housing is machined to fit the larger wheel (hence there being so little material left next to the wheel). Not in any way saying that-that would be a bad thing or wrong...pure curiosity on my part.

Edit: Holy crap the factory turbine is tiny. I had forgotten.
