    N55 VANOS Bolt Recall

Anyone received notification they can get the fix yet? Rumors?

I'm getting a bit tired of waiting for BMW to "get the needed parts". Bolts? Really?

Haven't seen anyone say anything. What is taking so long exactly? When was this supposed to be available?

I have seen some replaced. Not many people seem to visit the N55 section on this board.

    Check this website: http://www.bmwusa.com/standard/conte.../RecallRD.aspx

I got the letter a while ago and when I put my VIN in there it still says they are waiting for parts...I read some dealers said no fix until October. Pretty ridiculous but I don't really care. If something happens in the meantime and my engine somehow blows then I get a new one. lol

Just took my car in to the dealership today for oil change and brake fluid flush and they said they still don't have the vanos bolts yet.
He said they were supposed to come in July but now they are scheduled for end of August/early september.

So I started my car this morning and got the half engine light and the SES light. Read the codes and got:
    2D54
    2C58

I cleared the codes and the 2D54 went away but the 2C58 wont. I know the 2C58 just means that building boost is disabled aka "limp mode" but the 2D54 must be the cause of that. I can't find what that code means anywhere. I assume it is vanos related but who knows.
Happened on cold start with no symptoms other than maybe a little rougher idle. I didn't try driving it, just took the other car which sucks because the bimmer is supposed to be the reliable DD Click here to enlarge.
Anyone know what the code means?
Car is 2011 335i with 48k miles and only Cobb Stage 1 aggressive. CPO so not too worried, its just annoying.

Oh nevermind, I found it listed in the recall notice:
"2D54 - VANOS, exhaust, cold start: not controllable"

Def vanos recall. Called the dealer and they said they still don't have the vanos bolts so maybe ill get to drive around a new 335 for a month while they wait for parts lol.

    Mine was done last week.
I don't think they get many modified cars coming back to the dealer as the service advisor said it sounded like a bomb going off when it first started but the techs loved it haha.

Just got the invoice from the dealership. The description of the failure is pretty nasty and I don't really know what to think about the last part saying the found metal shavings in the oil pan...
In the subaru world I would never trust a block after finding metal shavings in the oil without a full rebuild! What do yall think?
At least the CPO is still active for another 52k miles.

Yeah definitely not good. Fortunately you have your warranty.

    BMW's quality is overrated eh?

Yeah for real! Im thinking I might just drive it until 90k miles and then sell it if the engine doesn't blow before then.
I bought a bimmer to get away from the engine problems of subaru but my subaru's stock block is still chugging along heavily modified and the much newer BMW is now a ticking time bomb...
I'm not too familiar with the N54/55 yet but what path exactly would the sheared bolt head have to take to get from the vanos to the oil pan?
I'm worried about the metal shavings plugging oil galleys and scoring bearing journals not to mention blocking the oil feed to the turbo or something. I would hope any floating flakes would get caught in the oil filter but I don't really know.

I don't know about the path I can't answer that.

All I can tell you is BMW is not what it used to be.

    Update:
I got the car back from the dealer and they said there really wasn't metal flakes in the oil, just the missing bolt head in the oil pan in one piece.
I talked to the master tech that worked on my car and he said they just had to explicitly write that the oil is contaminated or BMW corporate tells them to reuse the motor oil when they had to drop my pan.
It doesn't surprise me, BMW reeeeally doesn't like to waste motor oil lol. With the 15-20k mile oil change intervals they tell people.
Reflashed the Cobb now and everything seems to be great. It seem quite a bit quieter at idle (less clickity clack). All the work would have been almost $3k if I didn't have the CPO warranty because the recall is still "pending" they can't do any work. Basically I would have had to pay out of pocket and then try to get reimbursed from BMW after they actually start the recall.

Kinda funny off topic, they gave me a new loaner 320i with the efficient dynamic bull$#@! (supposed to get like 50mpg or something) and I ended up getting an average of 19 mpg over 4 days lol. Basically drove the same speed as I do in the 335 but I just had to be full throttle all the time. I get 22mpg normally I the 335.

i called today to check since i was told earlier that this recall did not apply to me. as far as being FBO....should i do anything before taking it in? i know they saw the intake last time...said nothing. i just set to the car to map 0 and called it the day. i heard nothing from them. not sure if this interferes with anything...jb4 harness perhaps?

Intake isn't a big deal but if I had the time i'd swap in the stock one.

    Definitely remove the JB4.
