Next generation 2016 R8 getting the 4.0 TFSI twin turbo V8 and dropping the naturally aspirated 4.2 FSI V8?

The R8 getting factory twin turbo V8 power? Sounds like an AudiBoost dream come true if this latest report from Automobilemag is to be believed. Frankly, it shouldn't be because there is no support for it. All the automotive journalists are guessing at this point and it is rather sad to see what the internet era has done to the quality of professional automotive journalism. Car and Driver reported earlier this year the 4.2 FSI would live on in the next generation R8.

So which is it? Well, maybe it isn't either as AutoExpress reported that the R8 would ditch the V8 for a twin turbo V6 engine. Does anyone know what the hell they are actually talking about? Probably not.

What we do know is the R8 will be replaced in the next couple years with a car based on the new Lamborghini Huracan platform. The Huracan has a naturally aspirated 5.2 liter V10 featuring both port and direct injection. It is essentially an updated version of the V10 the R8 has now so we can probably pencil that motor in for the new R8.

The wildcard is the motor slotted below it. If the R8 gets the 4.0 TFSI V8 there is no reason to get the V10. The V8 is cheaper, offers more torque, and is easily upgraded. Automobile reports 460 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque for the twin turbo V8 R8 which seem to be numbers they just pulled out of thin air. We all know RS6/RS7 put out 100 more horsepower than this from the motor and gain a ton of power with an ECU tune so the V8 twin turbo would basically trounce the V10 for less money.

The truth is that at this point only Audi knows what will happen with the new car. One of the three reports discussed above will be correct. Whomever it is will likely claim 'they got it right' and if they do not they will just ignore their previous report. That is how it works now.

Automobile's numbers are definitely sketchy. 369lbft out of a twin turbo V8? That is extremely low.

It's like people just make up whatever they want now and report it as fact.

I guess I'll start doing the same. The R8 is getting a quad turbo V12 diesel. Why? Because I said so. That's why.

Yeah, but don't forget to put some nonsensical spec on that - something like 502HP (the "2" makes it more believable) and 220lbft out of that diesel with a 9,400rpm redline. Click here to enlarge

Its about time they decided to turbo it from the factory. It will make tuning and hp gains way more easily achievable with options for ugraded turbos, tunes, etc.

    It's a sports car, not a dragster.

Agreed, but it's also supposed to be a super car. NA super cars are getting less and less. I would love to see a turbo or even supercharged version of the R8.

I don't know where the idea comes from that it is a supercar. It's Audi's 911 Rival.

No way they will let the R8 destroy the Huracan.

Super car, not hyper car. No? What would you call a super car?
