    Porsche's upcoming turbocharged flat-4 / boxer-4 testing on the ring and sounding very subdued

    Yes a new Porsche four-cylinder motor is on the way which PorscheBoost has reported multiple times. The motor is moving from paper to practice and Porsche is testing it in a 991 chassis interestingly enough. The motor will be used in the Cayman, Boxster, and Macan but it is interesting to note Porsche already will have experience with it in the 9991 meaning the potential for a four-cylinder motor findings its way back into the Porsche 911.

    The new boxer-4 is expected to be capable of 395+ horsepower so performance with the motor will not be the issue. The sound certainly leaves a lot to be desired compared to the naturally aspirated flat-6 as the turbocharger muffles a great deal of it. There is a lack of excitement in this area although it is not terrible by any means.

    That hasn't taken very long... But I suppose they want this motor ready for the mid-cycle refresh, which for the 991 will be in the next 2-3 years.

    It definitely doesn't have the wail of the 3.8, but it also doesn't sound anything like a Subaru, which should make some of the faithful happy. The purists will still exclaim the 993 was the last 'real' Porsche, and we will now have a nouveau purist group that will claim the 991.1 was the last. Click here to enlarge

    Assuming this engine is lighter than the flat six, I wonder how the chassis dynamics are on this car. Between weight and a shorter block, there must be a lot less ass wiggle.

    I like to see diesel engines in performance applications, it is pretty cool that porsche is testing this out. I am sure the turbo in this vehicle is variabke vein as well. The sound of the pdk upshifting is simply awesome.

    Could be that the flat four will be the default engine in the Carrera models, with the 3.8 being reserved for Carrera S. I think it's unlikely but there's really no other reason for them to test in a 991 chassis if they weren't going to use it in the 991. It's not like the 981 Cay/Box design is at all secret now.

    It would be interesting to see the weight savings in the rear of the 911 with this motor...
