    You think drag racing a boosted BMW is easy? Think again. Maximum PSI's turbo E36 M3 getting squirrely at E-Town

    The people who say drag racing is boring or easy apparently have never driven a serious car at the drag strip. It takes quite a bit of skill to launch a manual rear wheel drive car and to keep the rear end planted especially if it is making some power. This E36 is over 1000 wheel horsepower and has run a 9.1 @ 163 so it definitely qualifies as a car with a bit of power. Maximum PSI took the E36 back out to the strip hoping to break into the 8's and instead of a record slip driver Mike Radowski may have to change his briefs (or boxers, BimmerBoost is not familiar with his undergarments).

    The car ends up looking like it is on ice skates down the track getting a little squirrely out of the hole and then going noticeably sideways around the 1/8 mile mark. That will definitely get a heart pumping a bit. Radowski does a good job keeping the car out of the wall and still manages a mid 9 second run even after having to let off.

    Looks like there are some traction and differential issues to sort out before breaking into the 8's. It sure isn't easy.

    If that car could hook up, holy s**.... it would be fast. Well, let me take that back - it's already fast, but it would be insanely fast(er). Not sure how to word it without taking away from what has been done here, but hopefully it makes sense. Click here to enlarge

    It would be cool if you could adjust the wheelbase just like on a motorcycle - just throw an extra 8 inches to the length of the car = problem solved.

    Are you sure about that? I think it would make it more difficult to get weight to transfer to the rear... The only reason it helps on a motorcycle is because they are so light up front that they have trouble keeping the wheel down. If you're referring to wheelie bars its a different story, but those will do nothing in this example.

    This is something I have thought of heavily on my car.

    yank gas tank and rear axle. Obtain shortened Ford 8.8 axle with some 4.56's, Eaton E-locker, diff support.
    build a subframe out of the RTAB pockets, and triangulate to where the front subframe mounts were.
    make a ladder bar system with a watts link to center it.
    coils would still be in the same place, and have coil buckets on axle= easily hung and sprung.
    move shocks inboard to the trunk, build a shock tower brace from tower to tower to mount new shock locations.
    Murder a 60'...... like a 1.3 or better now that you have a serious axle, can tune shocks for launching, and can make rear anti-squat adjustments with the ladder bar to make the rear "dig" and transfer weight.

    Yeah, to be honest - not sure. I thought lengthening the wheelbase is what helps a car remain stable, as the leverage would be less - therfore the force to raise the front would be less, no?

    Before the diff issues the car was super stable. Diff is apart for upgrades and will be back to the track shortly!

    Ever heard of an "altered wheelbase" race car? you make the rear axle come FORWARD to help make the car pivot off the back axle- and make it teeter totter.

    Example: This rear axle was probably moved up 18 inches

    I must say, that after recent onslaught of AWD, auto shifted, quiet and drama free runs it is seriously refreshing to hear an open wastegate while watching a car put down rubber and get sideways at the 1/8 mile mark Click here to enlarge

    That makes sense, I think... I am probably being dull at this point, but in terms of stability, it sounds like length is good - but for drag racing (complete and utter force to the rear) shorter is better? I am thinking of a rail car, and then what you put in the picture - and am seeing both sides I think.

    The car now has an upgraded diff and some fresh slicks. It should hook up nice now.
