The next best thing to a 991 GT2 - The turbo and rear wheel drive 2014 RUF RCT

While Porsche debates internally whether to produce a 991 GT2 model or not RUF is filling the void for a rear wheel drive 991 based turbo flat-6 option with their RUF RCT. This car is available in either rear wheel or all wheel drive variants so it should satisfy all tastes. What makes this special other than the potential for RWD? Not much, as it has basically the same 3.8 liter direct injected flat-6 that the 991 Turbo / Turbo S with output at 'only' 525 horsepower.

The 991 Turbo S with its 560 horsepower exceeds it. There really isn't anything special here other than some bodywork changes (why did they get rid of the rear intakes?) as well as suspension tweaks. This only fills a void if one is in desperate need of a 991 body with a turbo and rear wheel drive and only if one is willing to pay a premium for it.

    RCT 2014

    Pfaffenhausen/Geneva, March 4th 2014
    A success story continues

RUF's turbocharged cars have a proven track record, sustained over 37 years at the cutting edge of automotive technology and design. A milestone model in the RUF sequel is the RUF RCT, originally launched in 1994. The abbreviation "RCT" stands for "RUF Carrera Turbo". The performance gains achieved by transforming a normally-aspirated flat-six power-unit into a high-torque motor through RUF's renowned turbo technology were enthusiastically received by devotees, clients and media alike. The 2014 RCT pays sincere homage to its heritage. The RUF RCT's new, intercooled twin-turbo 3.8-litre engine develops 525 hp (386 kW) @ 6.800 rpm. Maximum torque is 502 lb/ft (680 Nm), arriving @ 2.300 rpm and upward. The RCT's rear wing creates optimum downforce over the rear axle to further augment handling, whilst directing air to the rearmounted intercooler. The RUF RCT coupe can be configured with rear-wheel drive as well as an all-wheel drive powertrain. RUF's vast options list for the RCT includes the famous IRC - or Integrated Roll Cage, custom suspension packages, as well as an enticing palette of bespoke colors.

They don't list the curb weight or pricing. Kind of a pointless car IMO.

On the 911 Turbo, the rear quarter panel inlets are for the intercoolers. Where the hell are they getting air from? Did they move the intercoolers? Why go through the trouble if it makes the same power as stock? From what I understand the stock 911 Turbo makes boost at low rpm, so surely it can't be in order to improve response.

Edit: Oh, I see. They pick up 5 horsepower over the standard Turbo. So maybe they did redesign the intercooler setup. Maybe with the smaller rear wing and solid rear fenders it has less drag for a higher top speed? Seems like a lot to go through for such a small gain.

All valid questions and I have no clue.

I mean, I'd rather have the standard Turbo. They can keep this for whatever they are charging for it.

Nice to see a Manual Trans back in the Turbo. Regarding the IC airfeed, I'm gonna guess that they've rerouted everything through the inlet right above the rear wheels while on the RCT they're utilizing a ram-air intake system off the rear spoiler. I have NO idea how that's getting a suitable amount of air when you compare it to the OEM location, but I guess RUF believes it works.

I think he means that its based on the carrera, so thats why it doesnt have the turbo intakes. Its not a turbo body.

Yes but obviously it can't be a GT2 anyway.

Sorry I meant 991s in general, though most certainly I’d take the RUF over a Z06. Obviously it doesn’t make sense from a performance standpoint, but spending $100K on a car never makes sense so who cares.

I’m a bit of a ‘vette hater if you haven’t noticed. But the C7 is extremely appealing can’t deny that.

You don't see the point of the car. It's seen as a turbo kit for a carrera. And will be also sold as conversion kit.
RUF is the only one that can offer a carrera driver noticeable upgrade.

VF Engineering has offered previous (996/997) Carrera's supercharger kits, sure it's only a matter of time until they release one. And TPC Racing has also offered the 996/997 Carrera's a Turbo Conversion kit.
