    M3 on stilts? 2015 F26 X4M model coming

The BMW X4 is not yet available for sale but it appears BMW is planning on adding an M model to the X4 lineup. Whether you like the idea of M SUV's or not, this move makes a lot of sense. There really is nothing in the marketplace to challenge the Porsche Macan with its turbocharged six cylinder powerplants and dual clutch transmission. An X4M would be a natural rival to the Macan Turbo and considering how well the X5M and X6M sell this move is no surprise.

What will the X4M have under the hood? The move that makes the most sense is for the X4M to share the M3/M4 drivetrain. That means 425 horsepower, 406 pound-feet of torque, from the twin turbocharged S55 3.0 liter inline-6 motor. The question would be whether BMW would be able to give it a dual clutch transmission and all wheel drive as they currently do not have any dual clutch all wheel drive M models. The X5M and X6M both have automatic transmissions unlike the M5 and M6.

To rival the Macan a dual clutch with all wheel drive would be necessary. Additionally, BMW would have an SUV that could answer the challenge of the Audi RS Q3 and the Mercedes GLA45 AMG.

Keep in mind, this is not 100% confirmed as the report from Car and Driver does not quote any official BMW sources. Hopefully Car and Driver is not just trolling for hits. BMW officially went on record last year stating they feared an X4M would eat into X6 sales. The arrival of the Macan may have just changed someone's mind. An X4M appears inevitable.

I just wish it didn't use the m3/4 drive train. The only car the m3 has ever shared an engine with is the z4/z3 and understandably so

    Well what should it have?

Nothing is confirmed so that is just speculation on my part. I think it makes the most sense though.

There are a lot normal or average M3 buyers that don't even remotely use an M3 for what it is designed to do. They would be better off getting an SAV version. At least they have some utility, rather than owning a car that never goes near a track.

I don't know lol it just seems wrong to whore out a drivetrain that is as special and track focused as the m3's

I just don't see what else would work and be cost effective. Is BMW going to design a new motor just for this? Doubtful.

Will they give it a V8? Nope, it will kill the big brothers and fuel economy.

So, I think that is the most logical choice. Maybe a detuned version?
