Volkswagen's 261 MPG XL1 hybrid spotted running on Los Angeles City Streets

Well it really does exist and it really does run. The proof is below as a seemingly production ready Volkswagen XL1 was spotted running on the streets outside the Los Angeles Convention Center during the LA Auto Show. As a quick refresher, the XL1 is a 74 horsepower diesel hybrid with 47 horses coming from a two-cylinder diesel powerplant and the remaining 27 from an electric motor. It also has an incredibly sleek .127 drag coefficient.

Now, the car is 'interesting' looking to put it mildly. In person it kind of looked like it was from the future. No side mirrors you will notice just cameras pointing backward in their place no doubt helping with the drag coefficient just as the covered rear wheels do.

The size of the car is very, very small. There is a photo below with a photographer crouching next to it to give some size perspective.

Will this sell? The price range was rumored in the upper $1XX,XX range and it was said it would not come to the USA yet here it is on public roads in the United States.

This seems to be just an experiment for testing technology from VW and only 250 are to be produced if that. It will be interesting to see what comes of it although with 0-60 coming in 12.7 seconds this has to be the most boring $100,000+ car on the planet.

Too bad the price would be so high. I'd rather have one of these than just about any of the other hybrid/electric options out there.

I like the futuristic look of this car, and it's certainly economic with fuel consumption. Since I don't live in a city I'd never really buy anything like this...

This thing is a waste of money.
