    N54 power question

    Hi guys,

This may sound a little crazy but here it goes:
I have a bone stock '08 e82 135i and am looking to have the most powerful N54 in the world (or at least australia) by the time I am done. Eventually I'll be setting my sights on placing at WTAC (just want to enter when I actually have a chance at winning).

Have been doing some reading online and, other than going for a big single upgrade, tune and upgrading the fuel system, I'm a little stuck for what else needs to be done and would appreciate any suggestions. FWIW my partner is currently doing an N54 swap into his 130i, which has turned into a full 1M conversion by the looks of things so I am familiar with working with the engine, it's just a shame not many shops will touch them over here.

    Thanks!!!

Basically you need to upgrade the turbos, get a tune, and wait for a solid fuel system upgrade.

Thats what I assumed after doing the reading I'd done on it, i was hoping for more specifics outside of that

Let's just assume I'm not looking to enter WTAC in the next couple of years. I realize is need to do a full track build for it to work, unless I enter clubsprint class, which is a real possibility with bolt on mods and more track time

Well it really depends on your goals.

It's fine to be a n00b. Everyone was at one point.

You'll need lots of cooling mods to make it a track warrior
    meth, intercooler, two oil coolers.
Cobb tuned, spec2+, wavetrac, DCI, ARdp's, AA fmic, forge DV's, M3 links & Sways, bbs lm's, bunch of exterior mods, and one happy BMW driver

true, I'm tossing up just keeping this as a daily and getting a cheaper track car also (something I won't mind crashing as much) haha

besides the obvious turbo upgrade, there are some fueling options out there. Vargas has an HPFP and rail package that looks like it's working nicely on larger setups, and the walbo 255 in-line LPFP is also a proven upgrade for the lower pressure side. So turbos...tuning...fueling...then get an LSD...suspension...maybe one of the KW sets would be most recommended, at least the variant two coilover system which offers basic rebound adjustment, not hard to do some weight reduction, lighter battey, CF hood, trunk, and take out all seats and leave a nice lightweight racing seat in on race day. You'll also want to do a break upgrade, BBK may not be necessary, many upgrade rotors, pads, and go to SS lines and swap fluid all for around $800-1200 depending on rotors. If you're not running race gas, you'll want a meth kit. There is a plethera of information on each upgrade in various threads if you want to do a search, IMO the BMS JB4 with backend flash is the absolute best tuning option out right now. Very flexible and powerful tuning combo. The cobb is great on it's own with a pro-tune from say PTF (pro-tuning freaks). If you plan on doing serious tracking for LSD you'll probably want an OS Giken, PTF is a great for getting that taken care of. For intakes, the DIY Mr. 5 works well, the BMS DCI is awesome for $110, those two are pretty much best performance wise. There's really a lot to list, but fueling, transmission, and rear diff are the big ones on this car that may not usual necessary upgrades on other platforms. If you're 6AT you're kinda SOL for pushing more than 550whp consistently.

Your goals are achievable. All you need is money. Whatever you paid for the car should get you to world record status in most/all metrics.

Since you're looking to do WTAC racing, I assume that a twin turbo setup might be ideal, so long as the turbos are appropriately sized to give you a quality, large powerband.

    My .02
    • EMS -- COBB, COBB stacked with JB4, or Motec M1 (Motec has been used on an N55 race car in Australia, so you already have a proven DI solution, tuner & installation readily available.
    • FMIC -- Stepped Core (Helix/COBB) or Large 7" Race Intercooler (Evolution Racewerks, ETS, etc)
    • Aftermarket Charge Piping & BOV/DVs
    • Vargas Stage 3s - I'm thinking the VTR28RS might provide your perfect setup of optimal spool & powerband
    • Cooling Mods -- Meth, Upgraded Oil Cooling (Evolution Racewerks again), Radiator
    • Suspension -- Complete Coilover & M3 Conversion
    • Drivetrain -- Upgraded Clutch, Axles & LSD
    • Big Brake Kit w/ Stainless Lines & Upgraded Fluid
    • Fueling -- Here it can get dicey; if you stick with the OEM DME tuning you'll need a flash tune and one of the many solution available. If you go with the Motec, you might be able to fab up your own system with Bosch 044s or something else
    • Chassis -- Lightweight mods & chassis stiffening
    • Obvious Race Bits -- Data logger, Race Seats, Steering Wheel, Tires

^^Ran out of edit time; I'd also recommend a Dry Oil Sump System & Fuel Cell Baffle be installed, since the car will see lots of lateral G's in WTAC. A Single Turbo (5858) or something smaller might also be something worth considering, as long as it gives you that wide powerband. Obviously a single is gonna generate less heat & if you went Motec it'd be really easy to properly setup & tune.

Depending on how serious & financially invested you are, I'd also consider forged rods & pistons since the car will see lots of "abuse" in repeated race conditions.

VT3's won't fit in the RHD.. would have to be a top mount single... and at least the 600whp mark, it's about what they all make in the low classes to be slightly competitive.

The motec with the options you'd realistically need become so obscenely expensive.. when it's basically, for the N54, mainly a fuelling solution, that's a lot of money.... sure, if it was difficult to tune, or run a single, or something, absolutely.. but 10k+ just to get more fuel into the cylinders stings.

Many of the obvious items like oil coolers, intercoolers, i'll likely be making up/getting made up something nice for myself custom, so making a second one is a piece of cake

it's pretty crazy to add up what you need to get competitive at the most basic level of national stuff... it quickly reaches the 30-40k mark.

Do the current Flash + Piggy options work for N54 Single Turbos? Yea, are the best situation that provides the most amount of safety for the motor and/or maximize the power? Absolutely not.

If you're gonna build a car to a competitive racing level, the very last thing I'd look to "cut corners" on is the car's brain. Especially when the Motec is going to offer features that are not available on the OEM DME (in addition to better tuning capabilities, greater engine protection, you've got things like boost by gear, anti-lag, advanced traction control strategy, etc etc etc).

    To each's own

the difference is I can do the work in stages with my current car so I have enough time to save the money I need. This is the second post now you've been rude to me on, may I ask why?

You need a goal. That's what you need. If you want the best at literally everything, you'll need around $40k+ if you don't have a goal. If you have a goal you may only need half that.
