    Custom Single Turbo (need advice)

    Well guys its about that time for me to start ordering parts for my custom single build.

    Turbo I plan on using is a Garrett GT4088R ( what you guys think? )

    My goal is 600-700whp

    What wastegate could I run with this turbo?

    Get a GTX or precision of you're going to spend that much. GTX35r or PTE 6262 would be more than enough for your whp range.

    44mm wastegate would be good too. Depends on manifold as well if it's single or twin scroll etc.

    Tell me you have a 135i! I wish i knew the FFTEC TMK would fit a 135i 100% then I would probably be the first in Germany. Good luck on your build and keep us posted.

    If you want to do 600+ on pump gas, go with your first choice Garrett GT4088R. It is a turbo proven to make power. A lot of the e36 guys run them as well.

    Edit: or a 6766 or a 7168

    As a turbo expert, do not take this advice. I repeat do not buy a GT4088R, well that is unless you really really love turbo lag. For those power levels you can easily reach them with a GTX35R or go with the PT 6466 that is on numerous N54 powered vehicles and has made well over 700 WHP and has made close to 600 WHP on pump alone. A GT4088R can make power but it does so with bigger wheels instead of newer wheel technology. Bigger wheels, more weight, more weight means more mass the exhaust energy has to spin, meaning slower spool times, and slower transient response, which means your car is less fun to drive. Sure if all you care about it some top end power number on a dyno, buy a 4088 throw it on there and let her rip. If you actually drive your car, size your turbo carefully and go with what it proven, a 4088 is not what you want. My .02

    Also just a note, on garretts on website the 4088R is rated for 75 HP less than a GTX3582R, GTX turbine wheel is 9mm smaller, and comp wheel is 6 mm smaller. These things all add up to faster spool and the same if not more power potential. Just because something is working on another platform, doesn't mean its a smart choice. Yes the GTX turbo is a about $400 more expensive, but in the end that will be $400 well spent when you aren't twiddling your thumbs waiting for that 40 series to spool up.

    You are definitely the turbo expert, however I think the 6466 is overkill when comparing to gtx35. There is no compressor map to see where it would fall into the efficiency range, but it is a 900hp turbo. Making 600whp on that would be easy, but wasting a turbo at its true efficiency.. I would stick to the 6262/6266 or the GTX35r, they're both in the 750hp range and would probably feel better than the 6466 for a DD.

    This is true and I 100% agree with you, but thanks to the Vishnu guys, they have had both turbos on the car, 6262 and 6466 if you compare logs and dyno graphs, spool is nearly identical. Not sure what they are putting in the water over there at PT to achieve this, but if the 6466 spools the same as the 6262 and will have to work less hard to make the same power, and gives me more power potential I would go with that turbo.

    i agree the 6466 may be overkill as of now.

    I did did a bottom mount so went with this turbo in preparation of a true trans solution and real fueling down the road. I'm overkill for now, but I'll be waiting and ready for the next big break thru Click here to enlarge

    In that case, of course. It is correct to go with the 6466 without a doubt. Same reason why I went with a huge turbo on my cobalt even though it wasn't built. It's just that he said 600whp lol so yea. I had no clue that the 6262 and the 6466 were the same pretty much and was tested. I believe I'll be going for that too in my single setup. Looks like the best turbo for this platform.

    Yeah, either go with one of the Precision options, or the GTX3582R. It will get you to your desired power levels and should spool a lot faster than a GT4088R (and it's a smaller package which you will appreciate when you are designing the manifold).

    Damn guys you guys are great with info! Helped me out a lot, that's what I love about this forum...

    So I decided to ditch the GT40 and go with a Precision 6266 ball bearing.. Turbo is supposed to be rated at 750hp so that will be great for me.

    a lil fuel advice as i fought with it for a long time

    for your power goals, a simple solution is the 255 inline (in tank) and the vargas upgraded hpfp/rail. easy and it works

    not sure i got it right at or before the time he started selling them, but it works great! send a PM to @VargasTurboTech

    i wont get in a war over wastegates, but yea 38mm will work. thats what im using and its brilliant. Im sure 44mm would also be outstanding.
