Review: My RB Turbos, Cobb and Pro-Tuning-Freaks experience

I want to share my experience with upgraded turbos tuned by PTF. The reason I combine the RBs, COBB and PTF in a single review is because the hardware and software side of this upgrade is narrowly linked in my case.

First a little background. My car has been transformed from a daily driver into a track/weekend car over the course of the last years. Iíve run stock turbos with a JB+, JB4 and ProcedeV4/V5. Out of these tunes Iíve used the Procede the most, but I wonít go into the details here as thatís a subject of its own.

Mid 2012, I ordered a set of RB Turbos. The ordering and shipment process went flawless. There was a little delay of a couple weeks but that didnít bother me as I wasnít in a hassle and my car was running fine (at that time). After a bit of research it was clear to me that a COBB pro-tune (E-tune) was the only tune I would want to run the RBs with. Whilst I really liked the Procede, it needs a base flash to properly fuel upgraded twins. However, shipping the DME overseas was a no-go for me!

Furthermore, I have no plans to run Meth or alternative fuels (E85 or the like is not available in Luxembourg L ). So I donít need the failsafe features that piggybacks provide. Cobb takes the cake for providing a flash-at-home device, easy logging and the ability to get it custom tuned for my car and my demands by PTF.

Forward a couple months, the stock turbos died on me due to a mechanical failure. Resulting in no boost and greyish smoke out of the exhaust. I donít know the exact reason behind it (possibly ingestion of a foreign object), but consequently I had to tow my car 250 kms to my shop for RB installation. Not exactly how I had planned things out lol

The ď BMW Performance ShopĒ in Geel, Belgium had already installed a couple set of RBs so I knew it was the place for the task. I was relieved to get the car back in a perfect running state.

Prior to towing the car to the shop I had already removed the Procede and installed the Cobb AP. Running on OTS maps, I babyed the car home and right away contacted Dzenno from PTF for a custom tune. We took the approach to tune the car for road course racing and run lower boost for reduced heat and engine stress. So straight line maximum power/glory dyno runs was not the goal Click here to enlarge

Coming from the Procede with stellar boost control and throttle response, it has to be said that it took some time to get the Cobb maps tuned to my liking. I thank Dzenno for his patience and I hope thereís no picture of me as ďtop nut-busting customerĒ on his workdesk Click here to enlarge

Here are a couple waypoints of the tuning process:

    • Initially my car did not have the Alpina TCU Flash for 6AT. Therefore it suffered from post-shift timing flatline, especially on the 4-5 shift. With the flash, this issue is next to gone.
    • After the RB install, there was a boost leak in my car which I wasnít aware of but which Dzenno identified through looking at my logs. Great!
    • Throttle calibration (linear vs stock vs custom) has a HUGE impact on how the car feels.
    • Around 15 map revisions were done through the E-tuning process

In the end, the difference between the OTS and the pro-tuned maps is nothing but stunning. I would go so far and say that the COBB is only worth half the price without a proper custom tune. Yes, PTF is THAT good Click here to enlarge

Right now Iíve put around 5000 miles on my new setup, including some trackdays and the car performs flawlessly. No mechanical issues, no excessive oil consumption, turbo whine or anything.

Fuelwise I excusively run 98 octane (comparable to US 93 oct RON). To give you some numbers, my car was in the 12.0 seconds range from 60-130mph with the Procede and stock turbos. Now Iím at 10.5 seconds. Perfectly fine for a reliable road course setup where max boost is only around 16 psi! And Iíve never been happier with my car

Awesome write up man. I have had nothing but the same type of experience working with PTF. Patience while tuning, and the same mindset to push the platform. Good to see more happy customers.

I have to agree with all of the above. I've been liasing with Jake for my E-tune and the maps have excellent. My car has never ran so well!!

    Excellent review.

Your experience with PTF / Dzenno mirrors my own. I'm also extremely satisfied with my custom tune for the RB turbos.

    Wow, I'm feeling underserved.

Jake has only tweaked my maps 15-20 times ;-)

Hi, unfortunately I don't have a dyno nearby. The nearest one is almost 200km away and I'm not sure if it's worth going there without a baseline. The car has close to 500 crank hp. After my holiday in NYC next week I'll start working with Dzenno on a higher boost street map.

    Cheers,

    Christian

60-130 in 10.5 sec seems a bit slow or am i wrong? I only have JB4 and DCI and with a small E85 mix i am definately under 10 sec? (100-200km/h in ~8.5 sec, MT with slipping clutch that is).
