Edmunds 2014 Chevroley Corvette Stingray Z51 versus 2012 Porsche 991 Carrera S 7MT and PDK comparison

Here is a comparison that will be popping up very frequently over the next few months. Porsche 911 versus Chevrolet Corvette. American muscle versus German technology. Value versus status. Icon versus icon. The next generation fight is not really much different than past battles with the Corvette offering more performance for the dollar with 460 horses for the $68,175 price point and the Porsche 911 offering newer technology, refinement, and exclusivity at its $98,900 base price.

That technology point being key as the Porsche 991 Carrera S has an optional PDK transmission available that the Corvette does not. This makes a substantial difference in the numbers.

7-speed manual to 7-speed manual gives shows the Corvette has a substantial advantage. The PDK allows the Porsche to make more efficient use of its power essentially narrowing the performance gap the more powerful Chevrolet V8 offers through a technology and engineering advantage. The optional power kit offering 30 more horsepower to further narrow the power gap would be great to see as well. Here are the numbers:

The Corvette is four miles per hour faster in the 1/4 mile and 7/10's quicker manual to manual. A substantial difference. The PDK transmission in the 911 makes the 1/4 mile elapsed time difference a wash. 12.0 to 12.0. The trap speed favors the Corvette but .8 of a mph. The C7 is substantially quicker and faster with the manual than the Porsche 911 Carrera S is with its manual transmission. The Porsche Carrera S with the PDK is quicker and faster than its manual counterpart by just about as much as the Corvette is. Nothing shocking there.

What is surprising though is just how well the C7 handles. It pulls more on the skidpad (1.08g to 1.04g) and goes through the slalom faster at 72.8 miles per hour to the 911's 71.3. The Vette is not all about brawn. It can handle and it handles very well. This despite being 167 pounds heavier (112 pounds versus the PDK).

The video below shows the Corvette in action. A future comparison with the optional X51 power kit would be great to see. The C7 is quite a machine, Chevy should be proud.

    It is fair...manual vs manual.

The same article had PDK numbers as well. Scroll to the bottom. The manual C7 holds up real well against PDK. Same 1/4 time, quicker trap.

If GM puts a dual clutch in the C7 down the road, that would epic. C7 Z06 with dual clutch, game over.

Ugh why didn't I see that I looked at the video and didn't see anything. I hate re-writes.

I'm not normally a fan of Chevrolet cars, but the C7 is impressive. Very impressive. Arguably the best bang for the buck performance car out.

C7 Z06 with dual clutch? Game over indeed.
