N54 Open Source Code Tuning Project Funding

Hey guys, we're progressing really well and surprisingly quickly on this. There's a few things that need to be picked up. Nothing huge is necessary but looks like more than one spare DME will be needed, a certain gateway module, a power supply, a few more cables, etc., so we can have multiple bench flashing setups running for the project members programming and trying code.

A couple guys already donated but this is being officially opened up now. If you wish to contribute your contribution will be reflected in the UI and you will have access to the N54 Open Source private development sub-forum for the duration of the project as long as you agree to read only and you are not a member trying to join in out of the blue. You better have some rep points.

Paypal whatever you feel is appropriate to admin@germanboost.com if you wish to help. Thank you to everyone pooling together on this.

PLEASE SEND A PM WITH YOUR PAYPAL EMAIL WHEN YOUR DONATION IS SENT SO I KNOW WHO YOU ARE

It was brought to my attention that it might get cluttered if guys are donating $5 and so forth so $50 and up will receive credit and $100 and up special distinction. Hope this makes sense.

soo... kickstarter without the kickstarter? haha

    sweet, sweet.

any chance $100+ donors or $50+ or whatever

or higher tier even? can get the developed flashing cable, or some other related item?

something like that would be sweet. and a nice incentive!

The only issue with this is there are many different types of cables providing different levels of reliability, and most likely each cable will have to have support coded in because they don't all use the same drivers/can chips etc. We are currently sticking to the higher quality cables for reliability and congruence, and will be later be moving down to the cheaper chinese knock offs, which from looking at diagrams, have significantly 'less' guts inside of them and I'm not certain how well they will work when it comes to flashing, rather than just basic diagnostics.

yeah, so why not just include something reasonable out of the handful of different 'distinct' cables, once testing is complete? (by distinct i mean the kcan vs can, the different cables car to car wise etc.), to suit the specific donors car?

or are some of the cables SUPER expensive (which sorta defeats the purpose...)?

assuming like you say, the software will support specific cables.

You're asking me to promise the answer to an equation I don't have yet, but if we do have any generous donors, or donors at all, it will help. The going rate for a single DME is 150+ and the gateway module is about 150 as well among various other things required for each bench unit. Basically a single bench unit, you can count on costing 350-400. So its either we as project members devote our time and come out of our own pockets(I've already purchased most of the materials I need with my own money, and I don't even have an N54 at the moment) to provide this to the community, or we can all chip in a bit, which is a suggestion many people have already proposed. If you did, my wallet would appreciate it, I know that lol.

Not to mention, kick starter projects help you finance the building of a product the customer wants. In our case, it is to fund the hardware necessary to build the project. So if you want a lab power supply or obd connectors when its all said and done then I'm pretty sure that can be arranged lol. In the end, you'll get an open and free flash software.

Good thinking. Testing the flashing needs to have adequate hardware to avoid false interpretation of the testing results. Later on we can try how cheap / unreliable cable is good enough for the job.

I wasn't saying anything about or against that? Lol

It was just a simple suggestion that works well for actual kickstarter style projects, that's all..

i'm not sure what i'm asking that has no answer... If there's not going to be a cable (affordable or otberwise) then it's a moot operation?

thats actually a lot cheaper than i expected tbh.. Only $150 a DME? Bargain!.. Dealer quotes thousands hahah

no idea what that gateway module is though. Some sort of obd>dme interface?

@Flinchy, I just don't know what cables will work. We have to code around k line and d can. I can tell you that early models may be out of luck for the cheap cables, unless we do more work to get them going. The late model cars, we should be able to get the lesser cables going on... But in the end I'm going to recommended a quality cable.

Yes there can be a higher tier I just didn't think anyone would want to donate that much.

Keep in mind the 'guaranteed' cable right now is in the $200 range for the cable itself. The goal will be to make this work with all cables but first to get it to function.

Exactly this is why I would like team members to have more than one cable. Better to spend a little more and do better testing which benefits the community in the long run.

Not every DME will be the same price. Since they are used DME's you may get a good deal on one but not the same deal on another.

The gateway is a device that relays messages from the D-CAN or K-Line to the PT-CAN. In the E90, this resides in the footwell module, however we are using a different unit from an E60. This unit can cast between 150-300.

Also to clear this up, the cable we are using is less than that.

The gateway in the E90 is the JBE, which is attached to the fuse panel behind the glovebox. The footwell module is the FRM.

Google "e90 voltage supply & bus systems".
