Volkswagen intends to deliver Porsche 911 performance with Golf TDI fuel economy with XR1 lightweight 'supercar'

Remember the Volkswagen XL1? Here's a quick refresher. It's a 261 mile per gallon super lightweight hybrid with a 47 horsepower two cylinder diesel motor and a 27 horsepower electric motor that propels the XL1 to 60 miles per hour in 12.7 seconds. Yawn, boring. Well, it seems someone else at VW realized that although the mile per gallon numbers are cool for bragging rights walking is likely more exciting than driving an XL1. Enter the XR1 based on the XL1 platform but with a whole lot more power.

The idea is to take the research and technology that went into the XL1 and apply it something a bit more exciting. So use the carbon fiber body and try to maintain the .189 coefficient of drag but stretch and widen the platform a bit and give it the 2.0T out of the Golf GTI with some tweaks.

Combine the targeted 1873 pound curb weight with horsepower in the mid 200's and now you have something interesting. Porsche 911 Carrera Performance but with diesel Golf efficiency. That is a hell of a lot more exciting than praying you can pick up enough speed to merge onto the freeway.

Oh, the price is expected to drop to from the 1XX,XX rance for the XL1 to something around $60,000. That sounds ambitious but if they can pull it off it would be amazing. Will it get approved for production? Probably not, but out of these two cars we all know which one should.

Would drive. Volkswagen has always been good at giving us these pipe dream concept cars that, if executed well, would deliver an excellent package for reasonable $$. Too bad they rarely see production :/
