    RUF gives the new 981 Cayman S the balls it needs with the 3800S - 420 horsepower 3.8 liter PDK Boxster

    Porsche neuters the Boxster. Say what you want about how great the 911 is but Porsche protects their icon at the expense of Boxster and Cayman. There really is no reason a Boxster can not have more power than it does other than the fact it would stomp the equivalent 911, say the Carrera, hard. The proof is in the Cayman having the exact same 3.4 liter motor as the 991 Carrera but detuned specifically to protect the 911 (and its owner's ego).

    Well in comes RUF to do what everyone wants by putting the 3.8 liter motor out of the Carrera S into the Boxster calling it the 3800S. The PDK transmission is retained and the Boxster now has 420 horsepower versus the 315 horsepower Porsche gives it from the factory.

    The thing is, one does not need RUF's expensive swap. The 3.4 liter and 3.8 liter motors are basically identical. What is the main difference? The bore. The Boxster S and 991 Carrera have the exact same 3.4 liter at 97x77.5mm. The 991 Carrera S gets a bore increase to 102mm yet the stroke stays the same 77.5mm.

    So take a Boxster S, bore it out, get some factory Carrera S pistons, and voilą. A 991 Carrera S motor in a Boxster.

    not to mention the tuning involved, the body pieces, suspension tuning etc. It takes a lot more than just slapping some pistons in and going.

    Not to mention, RUF cars are delivered to their shop by Porsche as 'body in white'..meaning they are bare bones stripped down, and handbuilt to RUFs specs....along with their own VIN number. One of the only car shops in the world I think to be allowed by the Manufacturer to re-badge their own product.

    This car is a waste of money IMO.

    maybe it's the harsh flash/lighting.. but that interior looks a bit... erhh.. and is that cloth base for the seats?

    The interior looks like they are trying to give it a retro look of the early 911S, as well as the spartan-esqe interior...

    Not the best quality photos obviously. That said, nice move by RUF. Lots of potential for sure in the 981. I know btw from checking with the guys at Alpha-N that they are rebuilding the Alpha One as we speak based on the 981 instead. Hope they fix the rear when they are at it, because the rest of the car looks quite promising imho.
