Autocar First Drive of 981 Cayman S

    High praise from this reviewer:

I'd have this instead of the 911, any day of any week.

Porsche needs to stop holding the Cayman back and put a 911 engine in that thing.

Agreed. The 981/991 appeal to different buyers with different parameters. Mid vs Rear engine, 2 seats vs 2+2 (barely), 50 year-old design vs < 10.

Now that the 981 is sharing relatively few components with the 991, it makes sense to allow the models to overlap more than they did in the past. Base and S models as they are, but bring a Cayman R with a fully tuned 3.6, Cayman RS with the GT3 mill, and Cayman RSR with the GT3RS treatment. All priced accordingly.

Autocar reviews the new 981 Cayman S and absolutely adores it - Video

The new 981 Cayman has some big shoes to fill. The previous generation 987 Cayman was widely heralded as one of the best Porsche drivers cars ever made. The reviewer early on states that he did not think Porsche could top the previous generation model yet they have done exactly that. The car is quite simply showered with praise regarding its styling, balance, and power. Autocar just is in love with the vehicle and rightfully so, it's a superb drivers car.

Hearing how much Autocar loves the car is great but there are no test numbers. No acceleration tests, no skidpad numbers, no real numbers of any kind. A string of subjective opinions is nice but a review without hard data is just part of the picture and amounts to story time more than anything of real substance. Typical Autocar and typically British.

The review wraps up with the statement that the reviewer would take the Cayman S over any 911 any day of the week. That is a bold statement indeed.
