Volkswagen MKVII GTI Design Study revealed, gives us a glimpse of the upcoming GTI - 217 horsepower, 258 lb-ft

Volkswagen has yet to reveal the new MKVII GTI but this design study shown ahead of the Paris Auto Show gives us a good idea of how the model will look. The bodywork is obviously more aggressive than the standard MKVII Golf sporting an aggressive front fascia with integrated LED lights and a rear diffuser with twin exhaust pipes. Power will come from a 2.0 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder motor with 217 horses and 258 lb-ft of torque. An optional powerkit is said to up this to 230 horses.

It would be nice for a bit more power in the GTI up close to the 250 mark so the Golf R could make a big jump but Volkswagen is playing it safe. It is likely that the Golf R will match the new Audi S3 or be tuned slightly weaker to maintain model hierarchy. Fans were hoping for the Golf to make the jump to the next performance level maybe even with the Audi turbocharged 5-cylinder from the TT-RS but that likely won't be the case.

Come on VW, give us a much hotter Golf! It's time.

I really like it, nice facelift. Maybe this year, they'll finally put a new type of engine. At least a TSI fitted with a k04. No more of that 8 year old FSI bull$#@!.

I don't get why the don't put it around the 250+ hp mark. The Golf R can't step on the S3's toes either so this is kind of odd. Was hoping they might make a badass Golf finally to rival the Japanese pocket rockets but I guess not.

I would think so too. I think they're steering away from that crowd though. Look at the car, it's literally on par with Audi interior and looks. Most people probably won't need the car to be as fast as maybe you and I would want/need it to be. The Golf R is just pathetic, I don't even know why they spent money on that.

Looks like they just tuned it up a bit. 217 hp and 258 tq seems like it from the regular 200/207 that it came with.
