My Not-So-Little Pony: How Ford built the first 200-mph pony car.

Click here to enlargeWith a 200-mph top speed as their goal, the SVT engineers altered the GT500’s gearing. They changed the final-drive ratio from 3.55:1 (or optional 3.73:1) to 3.31:1 to give the GT500 longer legs, and five of the six gearbox ratios are new. First gear goes from 2.97:1 to 2.66:1, which, combined with the differential change, reduces maximum rear-wheel torque by a couple of percent from the 2012 model’s, despite the engine’s 90-pound-foot bump. Hameedi explains, “We already had more first-gear torque than we needed, so this makes it easier to launch the car.”
Speaking of which, off-the-line performance is now aided by a launch-control *system. Engine rpm is adjustable from 2500 to 5500 to match the available traction. According to Hameedi, “Only a pro can beat it—and that’s on a perfect day.”
To transmit the extra output, the GT500’s dual-plate clutch has grown in diameter from 9.4 inches to 10.2, and the transmission feeds the power to the differential via a one-piece carbon-fiber driveshaft. This unit is stiff enough to resist vibration at 200 mph and also saves several pounds over the previous two-piece steel shaft.
During engineering tests at the Nardo track in Italy, this GT500 has already achieved 202 mph. The gearing changes and higher redline allow this Shelby to hit 60 mph in first gear and in no more than 3.7 seconds; we expect a quarter-mile time in the mid-11s.

How they are able to push more boost to the aluminum block with thinner cylinder walls without blowing the engine?

Plasma wire technology that coats the cylinder walls. Stronger and lighter with less friction than using iron liners.

It is the same technology Nissan used in VR block, isn't it?

Yeah, Nissan actually licensed it from Ford. Ford claims they have an improved version than what they leased to Nissan.

You would be surprised my friend. Ford has been working with Tremec for almost 3 decades. Other than the T5's debacle, which I grenaided 3 of them, they have it sorted out.

I can tell you easily, that I will have one with in a few years. I like to wait for the depreciation to hit, like I did on the 03-04 Cobras. I can't help it, I am a tight wadClick here to enlarge

They can be engineered to handle the power.

650 HP and still only runs high 11s lol... sorry, a stock Z06 which can be had used now for under 40K is still the performance car of choice from the USA. I don't even want to get into the weight of that stang and how disconnected its steering will feel... I've driven every Mustang in the current lineup, none impress me.

It isn't quite that simple. This makes instant torque and the big dogs will have veyron levels of it if not more and that cars dct is 250k by itself.

They dont need to design it for the "big dogs" it just needs to hold up at stock power levels.

To each their own... However the Corvette vs GT500 comparo really isn't equal they are very different cars going to different demographics. That being said the current platform is light years ahead of the Fox platform. Is it perfect no. But if you have driven every current Mustang and walked away unimpressed with the performance then I find that more interesting than anything else. Its no M3 but its certainly no heap of junk. But to each their own!
