Brilliant or Blasphemy? LS1 V8 swapped into Porsche 996 Turbo

A member of LS1tech is doing one of the coolest things we have ever seen by swapping an LS1 V8 into a Porsche 996. Yes, several Porsche enthusiasts have no doubt had heart attacks reading this headline. In a way, that is what makes this swap so cool as it will create controversy and have purists pulling their hair out while others applaud it. The car lost its original motor in a fire so no running 996 Turbos were harmed during this process.

Gay. Plenty of good power can be made with original engine. I'm all for swaps but this to me is just dumb.

We can disagree. I see nothing awesome about it. TT ls series engine in e30. That would be awesome.

It had no original motor. The guy got the chassis as the original motor burned down.

Absolutely. I think it's kind of cool to grab a damaged 996 and do something like this.

To each his own. I'm just not feeling this swap. Of course it's somewhat cool for someone to do it.

ummm, cool story but the car probably has 30/70 weight distribution... kinda offsets having a porsche at least in the handling department.

The LS1 is lighter than the factory GT1 based motor by about 70 pounds.

This is true. Take the huge oil pan and chop it off, put a dry sump pan in there and call it a day...this way you can lower the crap out of it.

Its unique. Would I do it? Probably not because when I get bored with it and want to sell it, I will get nothing for it.

loool , thanks for the kind words and welcoming me here,
first off let me say that you guys have a nice forum here !

let me give a breif background of the whole situation here Click here to enlarge
i needed a project , and i put LS v8 in stuff , and i like the 996 platform (AWD,TT, etc) ,,,, so put that together and viola !
i did some research and was told by a reputable company that it can't be done , so that was enough motivition to do it Click here to enlarge

physically there was no reason why it shouldn't fit in there . so after researching and looking for the car for almost a year i found this thing ; it was a 2001 tiptronic car that had suffered an engine fire , and the owner had just parked outside in the elements for 3 years ( with the windows open - thats why the interior looks so bad ) . the engine and trans were already removed from the car , so was the rear driver side suspension , so i made an offer and he accepted - he had no idea why i wanted it Click here to enlarge

fast forward a year later , the car is almost done and it is what you see here Click here to enlarge

its almost done, just need to swap the rear harness, install the AC compressor and lines and fix up the interior . off course there is still the matter of paint and the rear decklis spioler , but that comes later . i have been working on this car under no deadline pressure so that i can make sure everything is done right (been known to indulge in "good enogh engineering" in the past ) . in case you are wondering where all this is happening , its in our ranch just outside Riyadh , Saudi Arabia and that is my private garage in there ( more like therapy room Click here to enlarge ) .

the whole idea of this project was to keep me intertained Click here to enlarge and get a dependable , daily driven , fun car . some might argue that i ruined a good car , some might argue that it would have been cheaper to fix the thing , but to each his own Click here to enlarge , i like the fact that i can replace the whole engine (that makes the same power NA as a tt 996) at roughly cost of an exhaust system Click here to enlarge
any how if you want more details about the build and progress of the project , you can see it in the link at the begining of the thread .

oh and speaking of weight distribution , i doubt i made it worse , its actually better ; i have to drop the rear suspension about an inch to get it to sit level again .

thanks again for welcoming me here Click here to enlarge

Welcome! Very happy to have you here and I would love to do a project like this myself at some point. Just with an LS7 Click here to enlarge

How were you able to retain the AWD?

10 years ago the young uninformed kid in me would say that it's blasphemy. Getting the history on the car and what it's been through I must really applaud the owner of what he's doing. In my eyes this man just rescued a car that would've basically ended up in a junk yard and recycled. Nowadays I don't really give a crap of what people put in their cars as long as they make it work. My current mindset is that I'll drive anything that has 4 wheels and goes like stink, I don't care what's in it, none of the car companies give a crap about me, they don't give a crap about the car I drive all I am is dollar signs in their eyes. Why should I hold some stupid allegiance to a car company?

You sir should get a medal! And did you actually hit that palm tree in the doughnut attempt....it sounds like you did.

I like the idea. How on earth did you get an LS1 all the way over there?

i read someone's comment on the youtube vid i posted and it mentioned the site in the poster's sig. ,,, so i came over Click here to enlarge

as for who sait it can't be done : it was the same people who just came out with their conversion kit (and posted it on my thread Click here to enlarge ) - don't want to offend anyone here Click here to enlarge

retaining AWD was the easy part ,,,, i almost did nothing Click here to enlarge all i had to do was shorten the front drive shaft about an inch or two because i moved the engine /trans forward by that much . to clarify things the trans is a stock 996 tt AWD trans .

now for the palm tree , none were harmed that day Click here to enlarge i stopped about 2 feet from it . if any one askes i was "testing" how well the ABS worked on dirt Click here to enlarge (yes the fronts were not inflated - in my rush to get to testing i forgot to hook up my laptop , air up the fron tires from 8 psi , and tighten the rear axle nuts Click here to enlarge )

and finally , we have more LS engines here than dirt ! (and we have alot of dirt Click here to enlarge ) they come in suburbans, trucks, corvettes, camaro's and trans AMs, Caprices and luminas - basically aussi holdens and commodors - which are the same as pontiac G8s. so there is no shortage of LS engines ,,,,,, porsche engines on the other hand are a totally different story Click here to enlarge

That is a long thread, would you mind pointing me in the right direction? So someone told you it couldn't be done and then they came out with a conversion kit for 911's? Is that right?
