• MotorTrend tests out the 2015 A3 with the new 1.8T motor pushing 170 horses to the front wheels

The new Audi/VW 1.8 turbo direct injected four-cylinder fills the entry level gasoline spot in the model VW and Audi model range now. Volkswagen previously used a naturally aspirated 2.5 liter inline-5 but this is the motor replacing it. It is based on the larger 2.0T model so they share the same EA888 engine architecture. With 170 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque it is not a powerhouse but the turbo torque out of the small displacement motor definitely shows potential.

So how does the engine fair in the A3? Consider first that this A3 only weighs 3108 pounds. Pretty light for an Audi sedan, right? Consider next that this motor in the A3 is available in front wheel drive only which means the car achieves that curb weight thanks to ditching Quattro. Despite the low weight and S-Tronic dual clutch gearbox acceleration is fairly lackluster with 0-60 coming in 6.8 seconds and the 1/4 mile in 15.4 @ 89.4.

Certainly nothing special but with a tune this might surprise a few people. However, once you start adding power and torque that front wheel drive traction will become a problem. Is it better to opt for the 2.0T Quattro models despite their heavier weight? The price hit is $3,000 for the larger motor and all wheel drive so unless price is the deciding factor the 2.0T makes more sense especially if one is interested in performance or tuning... like AudiBoost is.

The 2.0T w/ Quattro and DSG is pretty quick and not bad weight wise considering it has Quattro and is (I believe) roughly the size of the previous B6/7. About as quick as a B6/7 V8 S4 too. I really like it - tough choice between the S3 and M235i.

If I am correct that 170hp and 200 trq is off of 87 octane a simple (91/93) octane tune would probably add some power and shave some tenths!
