• 2014 Audi SQ5 test numbers - 13.5@102, 4400 pound curb weight - Not worth it?

      Finally some test figures for the new Audi SQ5 equipped with the 3.0 TFSI supercharged V6 in a 354 horse and 347 pound-feet of torque state of tune. Now, this is the same motor in the base Q5 although in 3.0 TFSI in the regular Q5 is set to 272 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The Q5 in 3.0 TFSI trim runs the 1/4 mile in 14.2@95.8 miles per hour. The SQ5 is definitely quicker with a 13.5@102.2 1/4 mile time.

      The thing is, the 3.0 TFSI supercharged V6 is highly tunable so a standard Q5 3.0 TFSI is capable of 12.8@105 with just an ECU tune. That makes it quicker and faster than the SQ5 for less money.

      Now there is more to the SQ5 than just acceleration such as the more aggressive body work, wheels, and better brakes. These items can all be added in the aftemarket though on a base Q5 3.0 TFSI.

      A Q5 with the 3.0 TFSI starts at $44,400. The SQ5 starts at $51,900 and of course also can and will be tuned. The price is not a major difference but the base car is clearly more of a performance value.

      With the launch of the Macan S though if one is interested in performance the Macan is clearly the better choice considering it is lighter, has a dual clutch transmission, a twin turbo V6 motor, and is actually cheaper than the SQ5.

      The biggest threat to the SQ5 seems to actually be from its own sibling over at Porsche. Test numbers below.

        4.8" to 60 is better than what Porsche is starting for the Macan S with sport chrono. Makes me wonder how much they are sandbagging the numbers... And if they aren't, there still time to turn up the boost a little bit. Click here to enlarge

        Ultimately I think people will choose based on brand preference and desire for Sport vs Utility. Always great to have choices, and I think the SQ5 will be great for those wanting something a little more conservative in image and styling than the Porsche.
