    Had my first N20 experience - Impressive!

    Took my first N20 for a spin yesterday. Anyway, this girl I'm seeing has an F30 328i. She came over and we went to dinner and she asked me to drive.

    So, I drove and naturally I wrung this thing out to see what it has. First of all, great power and torque from this little motor. Surprising! It's a strong little thing.

    Now the mid range punch is excellent. The response isn't even bad. It isn't NA M motor response but what is? It's great for what it is though.

    Now I pulled up to a light and put it into first. When I hit when the light went green, lag. Lag... then spool then nice power and torque. So, it does lag and if you're trying to hit it off the line you basically need to brake boost or it's useless for almost a full second it felt like.

    That all said this is a very impressive mill. It is more fun to drive than my E46 330i ever was primarily due to the torque. It is not more fun to drive than my E46 M3 was though. BMW really improved the 328i tremendously with this motor.

    I don't know what it is but I enjoyed my N20 experience more than my N54 experience. Not to say it's faster because it isn't but the throttle response seemed sharper. Valvetronic maybe?

    I have really enjoyed my N20 experiences too (F30, X3 and F10). Great little motor. I do differ on your N54 thoughts (love mine) but to be 100% honest, if the N20 had been out when I bought my car I'm not sure I'd have spent the extra money.

    I found the response interesting considering the N54 is 10.2:1 and the N20 is 10:0:1.

    Regardless, I really like the N20.

    Same feeling, I drove my moms car and I was like wow. I was pretty impressed, it pulled very well.

    Compression is certainly one element, but the 4 cylinder engine is probably a bit more nimble getting in and out of boost with a smaller turbo and less moving parts than a 6 cylinder.

    This is mere speculation I've never driven or know much about the N20.

    I've only driven the n20 in my wife's x3 but yea it's a fun lil motor. Very noisy on cold start up though and in general. Makes as many tinging / tap tap noises as my s65

    I had one in a F10 loaner and I share the same sentiments, sticky. Good power everywhere, decent response. MPG was where it was most impressive, however. It did around 25 mpg on commutes where my N54 335 could only manage 15-16. More nvh than I would prefer and more than in a B8.5 A4 I drove though

    Out of curiosity, have you ever owned an N54, sticky?

    With break boosting the take off is pretty good with this cars.
    With just stage 1 on the car the 328i was able to stay ahead of a stock E92 N55 335i up to 65mph. That is imperssive since with stage 1 it still has less whp than stock e92 N55. The 8 speed is pretty good.
