    2005 Porsche Turbo S 996 - 27,800 miles Just Bought

So after fluffing around like an old woman pedantically researching all sorts of cars ideas from buying a 360 Ferrari or an E92 M3 S/C or a F575M or any number of other vehicles I settled on a 997.1 Turbo with Sports Chrono... supposedly tuned etc... my PPI was indicative of no problems but I decided to cheese around and see what else was out there.

The 997.1 scared the living hell out of me and the wheels seemed a bit out of kilter (I did not pick this up testing it, nor on the PPI, nor for the 1st few drives)... the guy I sold it to barely drives any of his cars so he doesnt care.. wtf Click here to enlarge

Anyway, long story short I found this car and sold the 997.1 for what i paid plus the vig for newbrake pads, before I NYS registered her (costs like 9.5% or so all up with all costs, DMV, taxes etc)

There were approx 600 of the 996 Turbo S made and I am told there are only around 200-250 6MT (?).

The 996 was/is the most maligned of the Porsche models but my friends here have started to buy the 6MT versions with X50 package and/or the Turbo S which is essentially X50 with PCCB and some other goodies.

This car has an EVOMs v flow intake, maye have DV's (dealer wouldnt let me rip apart until I get her) and a modded exhaust. We thought it may have a tune but after contacting the dealership here who maintains the car and EVOMSit it appears there is not a tune..... we never thrashed her on the test so didnt test whether it got above 0.8 bar

    Tuning

I read a pile of stuff on 6speed (weird forum with some really nice people and some real Nancys)

Anyway, with the 997 it would have been easy to go E85 and get a COBB tune with an EPL pro-tune because that has a very robust fuel system but the 996 stock injectors, pumps etc are probably good for only up to about 610-650 bhp (which is what about 500 ish rwhp equivalent ?)

I am going to drive this (when they actually give me the registration, hopefully today or tomorrow) for a bit then will add a basic stage 1 tune and if still they ARE in fact still stock will replace Diverters then gradually take it from there.

Out here much more than 550 crank hp will scare me until I am used to the AWD and power and Porsche size etc on these windy roads

Selling the 2009 Turbo and buying this freed up some loot for me to look at M3's over the next few months. I really also like the C7 Vette but as a str8 two seater my missus said NO... same for the F360 etc, but she did like the look of those.

Thanks to everyone on these forums... I have been here since last July and have learned more about MODERN cars and how GREAT the American after-purchase and tuning people are (plus the pommie guys at Evolve etc)...... brilliant stuff....

If only NYS had lighter emissions requirements I would have definitely gone with an E46 M3 Turbo like Neko's or tried a E9x M3 once the turbo kits are up and running.... I have difficulty with my insurance because of my "visa" status as a foreigner even if we register in my missus' name... next stop will be an already built/blown E9x M3 for sure

I originally came to bimmerboost because I bought a cruddy off the web tuner which didnt work.... stoopid me didnt know sheet about modern cars (sad as an engineer), anyway I opened this "tuning" box and it was resistors, bastards wouldnt give me a refund either

I also didnt know on ebay you cannot really cancel your best offer so at one point I had 4 bids on cars around $58-$60k, luckily not all or any of the bids were hit..... dopey me

1.2 bar in WOT, been tuned, scary quick to 100 mph

No one knows what tune, old owner who did it kept no records, Porsche Southampton zero, I thought maybe EVOMSit but they checked VIN, nope, asked the other dealer here who workd on car, nope... yes has modded exhaust, DVs, tune... really scary quick 20-100 mph... more than the 997.1

but I get massive slippage in 2nd gear and 3rd at anything above 6k rpm.... time for upgraded clutch... plus am so unused to driving 6MT from LHS, have been riding clutch too much...

May just get it dynoed and start from there

Thx, I just got it this morning, drove it for 1/2 hour then got on my bike, rode the 18 miles back to the shop and picked up my old E39 540i...... the 996 TTS is twice as quick as the E39 to 100 mph or so it feels, steering is heavier on the Porker and ride is very sporty/firm...

Frankly, flooring it scared the sheet out of me... so it will take a while to get up to speed as it were

BTW - anyone in tri-state area, looking in at Aventura Motors is a must... lots of 1960s Mercs done up perfectly, F430s, F355, an old 308 Quatrovole, many slant nose, old 911 70's drop tops (?), a beaut 928S, a few Jags, E types and all and a couple of Austins, including the V6 scary monster at 370 hp and 2100 lbs PLUS this magical beast

If you aren't comfortable not knowing what tune you have there is always the option of a flash to stock and then getting it retuned. If you're happy with it though definitely not necessary.

It is really quick, but weare tracking down the owner and getting all the papers... I may buy the tuning suite from Eurodyne we were talking about and use that to check things... time to crawl under the car and see what exact pipes it has, cell/cats etc

Are these calculations in the scheme of things close

MY 996 TTS boost 1.2 bar (actually over to 1.3-1.4 in 4th on WOT)

0-100 mph in low 8.0-8.2s (manual mug tests, need to see with Vbox thingy)
    0-60 mph 3.5 s-3.6s (5 runs)

Turbo S baseline approx 450 bhp
    BHP 450
    Baseline 280
    Bars 0.8
Efficiency K24 turbo with DVs, x pipe 76%
    170.24
    1.2 255.36
    BHP Boosted 170
    At 1.2 bar = 255
    BHP 1.2 bar = 535
    AWHP @ 0.8 x BHP 428
    RWHP 454.75

does this seem about right without going dyno..... a Turbo S (X50) with stock 450 hp and an ECU tune, DV, mod exhaust boosting 1.2+ bars and running low 8secs 0-100 mph is about a 535-545 bhp car

I'd really need a trap speed but that all seems fine.

You can get billet K24's by the way that use your stock housings that will be a real kick in the pants...

TY, and Sticky... I may go down to VAC in Fillie next week to look at their E9x M3 beast..... we could get them to dyno and give us a run down yes ....

I think my problem is, this 996 TTS APPEARS much faster/more hp than anything I have had and it may just be an adjustment thingy

I'm curious what are you looking at the E9X M3 for now that you picked up the 996TT?

The 996 turbo will feel fast due to the torque and weight. The M3 won't provide the same sort of feel due to the power delivery unless of course you go turbo which then it will provide the top end scream with the turbo punch.
