APR versus Revo Technik MKVI Golf R tuning - Major APR superiority by 26.8 horsepower on same turbo?

This dyno graph comes from an APR dealer (Ecotune Scotland) so please keep that in mind. Ecotune Scotland posted this dynograph comparing APR and Revo Technik MKVI Volkswagen Golf R's. In the words of the tuner the results here are 'embarrassing' for Revo Technik. It is difficult to disagree as the the two MKVI Golf R's dyno'd show a 26.8 horsepower difference between each other. APR was quick to pounce on this and promote it through their Facebook feed.

Now, these are two different cars although both running the stock turbocharger. Additionally, it is a self-serving comparison. Without a full modification list for each Golf R it is difficult to know if it is just the tune accounting for the difference. Apparently the APR car had an upgraded fuel pump. That said, the APR air/fuel ratio does look smoother and is clearly more aggressive.

The proper way to do this comparison is to have each tuner dyno tune the same car. Regardless, APR is a juggernaut and no doubt one of the best tuners available. This does make Revo Technik look very weak though despite being a flawed comparison and they have yet to respond. Graphs like this sway minds on forums and those swayed minds take their dollars to what they think is the better option.

It has been a while, but some of the engineers that helped found REVO left APR and moved over. There were accusations of IP theft, etc. I do recall REVO coming up with VAG tunes awfully quickly at the time. It was all well documented on the 'tex (unless they blackholed the threads at some point).

I have owned both APR and REVO on VAG cars. REVO was lacking. In my mind they will always a second rate tuner when compared to an innovator like APR. The biggest mistake I ever made was not just getting the APR Stage 3+ for my 1.8T when I had it.

Ok so Revo is made up of some ex APR guys? I like these kinds of background stories. I never frequent Vortex (I just don't like the layout) plus am just learning about VW tuning.

It seems there is something to the APR superiority over Revo though. I also don't hear much about Revo and APR has new products every other week seemingly on every VW/Audi platform.

Here is the complaint from APRs site. It is still up after 11 years, which probably says something about how they feel about it. Like I said, I wouldn't even consider a REVO product even now. I think they are just a copy cat and wait for someone more intelligent (like APR) to figure out things and then mimic.

    Repped, nicely done.

If that is still up after 11 years there is bad blood. No wonder why APR was chest pumping this graph.

Good stuff, thanks. I have some reading to do.

I never knew about the APR revo beef

however the statis, unitronic, Eurojet, and SPM one is pretty good.
I wish I knew the full story on that though. All I know is there is one downpipe with like 3 or 4 brands of it.

Captain here. Just to correct this article.

Now, these are two different cars although both running the stock turbocharger.
Wrong. This is the same car (red late 2012 R). I was present on the day in question and it's an R forum members car (previously GTI). The first run was Revo, the next two runs were APR. Nothing else was changed other than the car was flashed with APR Stage 2+ v3.4, 98RON.

Spec list is full Milltek with sports cat, Eurojet intercooler, Autotech HPFP and ITG CAI.

APR is blowing turbos on the Mk7 platform like wildfire. One guy has blown 3 turbos since it was APR tuned and multiple threads on blown turbos with APR tunes. Not good.

To be fair it would seem there is a fault with a number of the turbo revisions that VW is using on the GTI platform. That said, lots of reports of people with APR stage 1 tunes are blowing their turbos.

You can add me to the list of failed turbos. To be fair both stock and tuned mk7s turbos are failing but I'm sure having a tune increases and speeds up the failure rate.

damn i didn't know about the blowing turbos. What turbos are on these cars? who makes them?

I know the gen 1 EA888 had IHI turbos instead of the BorgWarner k03 that came on the ea133 FSI engines, but I don't really recall anyone have a failed turbo, with the exception of maybe one or two who added a manual boost controller to them....
