Auto Transmission Cooler (n54) upgraded turbos

Looking into keeping my transmission cooler than stock especially with putting more power down. Has anyone tried one of these?

Thinking about going custom with this one.

Yes, I definitely want to upgrade my TQ convertor too. I had my shop doing my ST build install a mishimoto trans cooler, mounted behind the kidney grills and modified to run Dash 10 oil lines instead of dash 8 for more capacity. It is not fan cooled like that one, although I did originally look at a fan cooled one from ecstuning. Here's the mishimoto unit I ended up with.

    http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/Site...ler/ES1892559/

I think the fan cooled may provide better cooling, but I wasn't sure where to mount it.

Here's the fan cooled option from MM

    http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/Site...ler/ES2083305/

EDIT: I wonder if you could run both? LMK where you mount the fan cooled one, I'd totally be down if I could run both. I don't see why not. More cooling and more oil capacity

Exactly! I was looking at the none fan cooled one when I ran across the fan cooled and decided that would be the best option if it can fit. I believe with a little bit of modification it will fit. Yeah I thinking two shouldn't be bad, better cooling is always good!

I'm cautiously optimistic that some addtl. cooling will really help the 6AT hold. It's the heat that smokes these things. Good luck keep us updated.

I've been waiting to start my thread on mine until it is done or close to it. Maybe this week I will start it though and start posting pics, I have a pic of my trans cooler, mounted, and the mani I believe is done or will be in the next couple days, a lot to do yet, and I'm contemplating ordering some motor parts from Alex at ABR and just building the motor off the bat instead of waiting for it to go and then damage the block or something stupid.

I was thinking about doing the same thing. Its made to handle more TQ I don't see no reason why we shouldn't be able to. I am going to look for one.

It’s been discussed on the other forum awhile back. Will try to find the thread but a BMW tech said it was a no go. Or a potentially viable solution for someone with time and $. The HP26 TC would be nice if it worked. Actually I think it was also discussed RE: swapping the trans outright. IDK if the bellhousings match either. I’ll look them up on realOEM for all I know they aren’t even close.

Oh and the stall speed is lower. Who knows how it would drive in an N54 car.

The transmission is quite different, I've looked through both catalogs and they are pretty far off. Besides torque handling the rest of the trans is a huge step backward.

torque converter isn't a big deal, plenty of places can rebuild a torque converter, and quite a few people have already upgrade TC's.

Yea I know LVL10 will do one. Would be fantastic if we could get away with single turbo curves “simply” with additional/dedicated cooling and possibly a stronger converter.

Still doesn’t get us around the software side of things, which is personally where I think the serious issue is. But in due time, fingers crossed.

Because its the same cooling system. The radiator has an extra pipe to the AT, thats why there are different part numbers for AT and MT.

Not much, it's a mishimoto universal trans cooler, comes fitted for Dash 8 lines, the shop cut and welded on black SS Dash 10 fittings and used black SS Dash 10 lines to hook it up, should add pretty significant cooling between the cooler, its placement, and the added trans oil capacity. Also doing stiffer transmission mounts and alpina flash

I'm debating on sending a plastic trans oil pan to my buddy that owns a machine shop and see if he can machine me a billet one, not sure which metal to use though....

Oof a billet pan would be no fun to make, just thinking over the design of it in my head. All these random contours and whatnot. But would be extremely badass so by all means, proceed.

Just speculating, what do we think of the following combination?

    Alpina flash
    LVL10 valvebody
Dedicated trans cooler which holds X amount of additional fluid, frequent changes of fluid and the pan say every 25K. A more shear and heat resistant fluid like D6 redline.
    Legitimate mounts that aren’t terrible

The above could be done with relatively modest down time, and non-wallet crushing costs. Watched Sammy's DIY and it doesn't look too bad to pull the valvebody. Then i'm assuming your cooler setup didn't cost an arm and a leg with labor? Could be wrong there.

I like that combo, I'm doing all of that except the valvebody, not sure how much that will help or not. I'll have to look into that, do you know how much the valvebody is off hand? And could you link Sammy'd DIY? I never saw that one.
