Volkswagen readying factory turbo / forced induction VR6 motor with 340+ horsepower and 3.0 liters of displacement

This is some very good news for Volkswagen performance enthusiasts. VWBoost.com speculated that with the announcement of Volkswagen going to a 100% turbocharged lineup the VR6 had a good chance of getting an update to include a turbo from the factory. That is exactly what is set to happen Volkswagen's new head of engine development Friedrich Eichler (who previously worked at AMG) is developing a boosted VR6.

Displacement is expected to be around 3.0 liters with a 15 degree cylinder bank able and horsepower in the 340 range courtesy of two turbochargers. Direct injection will likely be a part of the package as the newer VR6's are direct injected from the factory.

Expect this motor to replace the naturally aspirated VR6 in VW models. Additionally, it bodes well for tuning. USP Motorsports has shown us what a turbo VR6 is capable of trapping over 160 miles per hour in the 1/4 and running 9's.

Definitely exciting times for boosted motors and their enthusiasts.

the MK7 Golf-R will have an updated TSI engine, 4cylinders.

This MAY see duty in an MK8 version though. Chances are it'll see duty in the SUVs and maybe the top end CC

Though a AWD CC-R or Tiguan-R would be pretty awesome.

This motor will obviously be used in the Passat/CC first.

Would be sick in a Golf R but doubtful.

Thank you for clearing that up.

Considering VW's previous use of the VR6 layout and the resulting fan base, I am willing to bet this will be found in at least one smaller, sportier car. The CC isn't exactly what I was picturing however that package does sound appealing. I'll keep my fingers crossed for something lighter weight than a passat/CC with this engine.

Regardless of where this engine will go I'm sure it will shine.

I would love to see this in something with a sporty focus as well buy Audi may be worried of the RS4/RS5 overlap. Imagine a much more affordable VW product running circles around Audi's. Excuse me, rings around Audi's.

This is interesting. Hopefully the manifolds aren't welded to the head like with the new 1.8t.

i think manufacturers are going that way. I believe the next generation TSI will have the manifolds internal too.

Do you know if the turbos are part of the manifold, or bolted on the 1.8t's? I know with the new civic SI they have manifolds as part of the heads, but they have a two piece manifold with a bolted section.

Almost everybody is doing that now. It's frustrating but an aftermarket manifold is better anyway.
