DTM 2013 - Controversy at the Norisring as Audi wins the race but is then stripped of the victory - Most idiotic disqualification ever?

Audi's Mattias Ekstrom won the DTM race at the Norisring in Germany this past weekend but was stripped of his victory. Ekstrom was judged to have violated Section 44 of the DTM regulations. What was this violation? That he was given water while celebrating his victory. Seriously, that is not a joke. Water was poured into Ekstrom's pocket as the picture and video below shows and for this violation he was stripped of his victory. This has to be the most idiotic disqualification in the history of Motorsport.

Audi is appealing the decision which for now gives the victory to Mercedes AMG's Robert Wickens. The reason the rule exists is that DTM drivers are weighed to make sure nobody is racing under the minimum weight. Pour some water in your pocket on a hot day and see how much that changes your weight. In addition to the disqualification Ekstrom also received a 1000 Euro fine for not attaching his steering wheel properly as the celebration ensued. DTM, there is something seriously wrong with your rules when somebody in the stands pouring water at a driver changes a race outcome. Hopefully Audi wins their appeal which they have two days to write and send.

So if I want someone to lose a race all I have to do is grab a water bottle and soak them with it after the race. Brilliant.

Race drivers can lose a couple pounds the course of a race through sweating.

The controversy is merely that Ekstrom + his car were 6kg over the limit after the race. So the 2 liters = 2kg of water did not have a significant impact.

However, rules are rules. No liquid or weight must be added or removed whilst the car is in the parc fermé. And the sanction is disqualification. Everyone was aware of that.

The combined weight after a race is the important weight, not the starting weight. Drivers loose different amounts of water, cars consume fuel at a different rate. Teams have to take this into consideration.

Stupid mistake by his father, or maybe a cunning plot to make him a few grams hevyer for the weighing.

In any case, you can not add weight to your self untill you have been weighted, it may be dumb but its the rules.

This rule is equal in all FIA motorsports actually.
That is why normally there is officially no driver contact allowed with audience until the driver is weighed.
This is such a clear example of why it is not allowed that I totally support the disqualification.
It's almost the same as some mechanc dropping some heavy wrenches or a lead block in his pocket.
    His father is clearly stupid.
DTM is a class where the car+driver normally reach critical weight at the end of the race due to fuel consumption.
    So every gram counts.
He must have felt what his father was doing and didn't act upon it, so he himself is also to blame for the disqualification.
In this day and age with all the cameras pointed upon you there is no getting away with this. He mist have known this...
    Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Regardless it is someone from the stands Ekstrom was not in control of. Anyone can pour water on a driver that should not mean the driver is responsible. Family member, non-family member, whatever.

Just as if they dont properly mount the wheels, its not a Ekstrom fault but a team fault and you loos as a team there too. Probably more than 60% of the things that can make him loose a race are not in Ekstrom hand. This is for sure a stupid one.... but rules are rules. They are the same for all and they knew it before. Maybe if it was a fan or one of the other team members... but in this case its the father so his own team... its just .. stupid.
