    Turbo Warranty Work!!

For a while I've been fighting bad wastegate rattle and wastegates getting stuck open (no codes). So I finanlly brought it to my dealerships attention and my appointment is set for Friday. Currently I'm full bolt on and I was open with them about it. I figured why lie about it. Any normal mechanic is going to be able to tell if the stock intercooler, dps and chargepipe ect. were removed and put back. Things just don't look the same. My dealer said the wastegates are know issues and that my mods "shouldn't" void the warranty. Claiming they are going to try to have them covered..... As long as I'm not running high boost, hence why I'm removing the cobb ap and letting the bms dp fix on.

COUPLE QUESTIONS. Even if the Ap is unmarried will the history be traceable? I told them if they evaluate it and say they won't cover it to not do any work because I would rather spend the money on vargas stage 2's. Can a dealership tear the whole thing apart and at the end say they aren't going to cover it? I recently noticed my vacuum/boost lines are looking questionable, but feel I shouldn't change the lines before the dealer. Has anyone with failed wastegates had the same issues? Turbos are starting to feel laggy, they randomly open up on the highway losing all boost and a god awful exhaust note. I've been trying to take logs but every time I get errors, so tuners can't really help me.

Just looking for some feedback, suggestions and fingers crossed. I just want to drive my car again. I literally put only 1,000 miles on my car this summer because of lack of time to work on it. Drives me insane.

    Thanks.

    Josh.

There's a ton of reasons as to why you should lie to them about it. If they can screw you, they will. They make a living doing it everyday to hard working people.

Possibly a mistake. I just figure they would be able to tell. I'm a technician by trade and it's pretty obvious when things were touched or untouched. If they want to void my wastegate warranty I figure they will do it modified or not. I just hope they don't won't claim to cover it, do the work and then slam me with a bill because they changed their mind.

I think they need your or BMW's approval before they tear into it.

That would be great. I just don't want a surprise at the end. If I have to fork over the dough it definitely wont be for stockers.

I don't think they'll do anything unfortunately. I took my car in a few months ago for turbos and the dealership confirmed I needed new ones due to rattle, however, they wouldn't replace them. On the sheet they gave me it said "discovered aftermarket boost hose set-up" which is why they denied me

First thing PuMA asks, "are there any modifications to the vehicle" when submitting your replacement ticket.

Heh, they just ignore the law. Dealer pulled that with me too the compromise was eventually 50/50 but still BS.

Well all I can do is cross my fingers. Maybe ill be lucky, but if not I guess it's a good excuse for stage 2's.

My vote is to just go with Vargas Stage 2.

It would suck for them to take your turbos off, tell you they can't cover them under warranty, and ask you if you want to a) pay for the new turbos or b) have them put your bad turbos back on, all the while charging you for labor either way.

Do any of you know what the typical wastegate failure consists of? What actually goes wrong.

The bushing (or lack of one) wears the shaft and turbo housing......letting it not pivot, but rotate kinda in its bore. The wastegate actuator can't stroke out the wastegate lever accurately, allowing the flap to not seal correctly. Not sealing at a 90* angle means the flap wears out causing floppy movements = type writer noise on decel and improper sealing = boost loss or lack of boost due to exhaust escaping vs. being sent thru the turbo

why rear wastegate actuator has a good amount of play. I can wiggle it around a good amount from the top of the car. I just dont understand why I never get a code. My wastegates will literally stick open for about a minute (worst case) while cruising, but have yet to receive a code.

Well, with a Vargas turbo setup, the feed and drain lines have to be replaced as well per their instructions for warranty.

coolant/oil/feed and drain lines/gaskets/etc/labor for stage 1 or 2 is about 2100 bucks
    stage 3 is about 3200.

Expensive, I know. Don't shoot the messenger. If the lines weren't being replaced, it would save about 350

$2100 huh? seems a little high...higher than I thought. I thought it was 10-12 hours or so to install them.
