Let's make real open source N54 tuning happen

Ok, so the 'open source' tuning turned out to not be what anyone expected huuuuuuge shock Click here to enlarge

That doesn't mean open source can't happen. We need to pool our resources and make this happen. As I already stated, I'll throw in cash and we can group fund it.

What do we need? Well, good question. We need somebody good with code.

Additionally, this should be made to work with a standard cable and simply connect to a laptop. Anyone have cable suggestions?

Some good work has already been done behind the scenes but a long road to go. Any help is appreciated.

The first step would simply be to record a read using a known good flash tool. Like the Dimsport or "OpenFlash". Then from that data you need to start to break down what is being done to initiate the read, how the DME responds with data, how the flash tool sends its "very good, carry on" commands, etc. You'd use something similar to this OBDII Y cable with a USB/CAN cable on one end doing the recording.

After you are able to read the file and save it in a format that resembles an actual file then you'd repeat that process for the write. Which I imagine will be a bit more complicated.

Actually terry, I think we already have that figured out Click here to enlarge

I'm thinking that we need to start with just about any usb->serial/obd2 cable that has an FTDI chipset inside of it that supports the right protocols for can bus. I am not certain, but maybe even something like this may work:

This project is big for the whole community. Thanks for Sticky and those who are able to help.

Supporting K-line for the early MSD80 in addition to CAN is a feasible goal and not too difficult.

We know cable only solution is doable and I'm sure the community can do it.
Later on it would be great to be able to use e.g. android phone for the map changes.

@Terry@BMS, I'm not against getting a cable like that as well. I think we have a long road ahead including debugging and all datapoints would be good. Where did you acquire such splitter?

Bells and whistles can be added later. This can even be command line as @klipseracer stated. This is a matter of function over form right now.

I think that the MicroCAN2 is just a name for a usb-OBD cable that has a FTDI usb -> parallel converter and uses a separate can controller and can controller interface. I've found some source code online that should help me understand more of whats going on.

We need to support k line communications to cover all N54 vehicles. I suggest the one stop electronics k+dcan cable or any equivalent. I think others have said there is a cheaper eBay able that has proven to be successful for Alpina transmission flashing and INPA use. Either would would I think.

If you need cabling or hardware built, let me know

I think just about any cable with K/D canbus support should work. Its just that the internal components inside may not be supported by INPA. But getting a cable that is supported would probably help. If people want free choice on their cable, it would probably be best to use a cable that utilizes controllers inside that share the same commands/protocol. FTDI is IMO the leader in this area with seemingly good open source support, but have yet to see on the canbus end.

The problem with k line is as far as I know they are more expensive. I'd start with just CAN to keep things simple. The basic method I outlined is how this is commonly done. It's just a $10 OBDII splitter. If somehow you've already been able to decompile a flashing tool (I'm not sure how you could as I don't know of any available currently) then you'd use the splitter to verify you were on the right track with how things work.
