2015 R8 to go on a diet and maintain same V8 and V10 motor options - Curb weight under 3300 pounds targeted

And the weight loss rage among the German manufacturers continues. Definitely a good thing as cars have gotten quite heavy but Audi in particular is attempting to achieve huge weight loss figures across their lineup. From 800 pounds for the new Q7 to now about 300 pounds for the R8 coupe (more for the spyder). It makes sense the R8 will be lighter as the next generation Gallardo on which it will be based is also targeting a lower curb weight.

By lowering the weight Audi will not have to develop all new motors. Simply some mild tweaking for the V8 and V10 likely around 25 horsepower each. Shedding weight is just as good as adding power and better really as it improves all performance aspects not just acceleration. Efficiency as well which is one of the reasons the VW group is investing in lightweight materials such as CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) and aluminum.

So much like the new SL from Mercedes the car will be familiar but more efficient, more powerful, and lighter. That's progress.
