Affordable (front wheel drive) manual turbo four seat cabrio comparison - The 2013 Beetle Turbo Convertible pitted against the Mini Cooper S Convertible

With summer coming up no doubt affordable sporty convertibles will be getting a bit of attention. There are two cars that definitely fit the bill in the sporty yet affordable category and those would be the 2013 Beetle Turbo Convertible and the Mini Cooper S Convertible. The cars are very similar both being front wheel drive, having turbo four cylinder motors, and offering manual transmissions. Not to mention their base prices are within $260 of each other.

Car and Driver did the comparison between the two and ended up picking the Beetle. The Mini makes a strong case for the win however offering a lighter curb weight by a whopping 480 pounds, quicker acceleration, and better handling. It also gets better fuel mileage by 6 miles per gallon. Car and Driver also states there are few more mechanically involving cars. So why in the world does it lose?

Apparently the Beetle wins because it is more comfortable and softer. So, it's not as much fun to drive but it's more comfortable. Well, these are supposed to be fun in the sun cars are they not? The Cooper S gets punished for being too sporty for its own good but the Beetle is rewarded for being softer, heavier, and slower? You make sense of it.

These are both great cars but it seems the Mini got robbed of the win here. If one wants the sportier car, it's the Mini. If one wants the more comfortable drop top, it's the Beetle. VWBoost would have the result reversed.

    C&D just has a hard-on for VW.

on the upside i believe they compared the new mk7 GTI vs the Ford focus ST (both euro spec) and the appropriate winner won that.

Having owned VW's and a Mini I cannot see what these guys had in mind, The Mini has been the premier compact car for many years now, having owned an 02 MCS with 200 whp even Subaru's Sti respected me, but I gather the new SOFTNESS is the key to win and forget about sportiness, this is the new age of things, WTF amd I loosing my brain here.
