    Subaru BRZ Turbo

Motor Trend completed their 2012 Best Driver Car test. The 2013 Subaru BRZ placed 4th. Now, I know this little car doesn't actually fit in with the rest of the competitors. But, that's mainly because of its price and modest 200 hp, 2-liter N/A engine. It's that low power output that really makes the inclusion of this car among such a high horsepower pack of road-going beasts, a silly proposition. And that's because, outside of driving this car balls-out on a track, the car should disappoint drivers that are accustomed to driving more powerful cars on regular roads.

You can't drive cars on public roads with the same unbridled enthusiasm as you can on a track. Click here to enlarge Or at least, you shouldn't. What this car is missing to be considered a viable option as a car that can be enjoyed on public roads without the need to throw the car into every corner to extract the car's potential is, extra power. Apparently, we may see a more powerful BRZ "in the near future when Subaru releases a turbocharged, 274-hp version," says Motor Trend.

I can attest to the fun factor and impressive power delivery of this 2 liter, 274 bhp/269 torque engine. I have a Sonata 2.0T with this engine. And it really makes good power. It pulls hard for such a small engine. And the Sonata weighs approximately 689 lbs more than the BRZ! What slows down the Sonata is the non-performance oriented transmission programming. This will not be an issue with the manual-optioned, BRZ. The potential of this BRZ T is really appealing.

I have an interest in this car because I have a good friend who is also a car enthusiast and we've been discussing the pros/cons of the BRZ for some time. So, when I read Motor Trend's mention of the turbo engine coming down the pipeline, I got excited.

I'm excited about the turbo version. I absolutely love the STi concept they produced.

Everyone agrees that all this car needs is more power to set it off. Cant wait to drive one.

Should be a fun little car. Now these are what car manufacturers should be making. And of all people, Toyota makes it... albeit with subaru but ya Toyota...surprising.

My friend just purchased an FR-S, it really does feel like a go-kart. Although it lacks speed and acceleration, the way it drives and the throttle response compensates for everything.

whats funny is that the scion TC which was never meant to be a sports car, is FWD and has a slightly larger 2.4L motor has made 650 WHP... I doubt this will come even 250 WHP shy of that. Thank you Subaru for a Direct Injected 4 cylinder boxer motor...

I saw it in person at the mall a couple weeks ago. It has a little presence. But, I don't like the way it looks from the back so much. The pencil-thin tires also don't look so good. But, I guess they're like that for handling purposes. Sounds counter-intuitive. But, apparently, it's difficult to get this car to oversteer. I assume that's why they used skinny tires.

although I havent driven one, I love everything this car stands for. The car world has been missing this car and needs more like it. The affordable sports car that is FUN, RWD and has from what I hear a good GEARBOX/CLUTCH. If this car catches on and succeeds maybe more auto companies will catch on and release cars similar.

To my knowledge the Genesis doesnt compare. The BRZ/FR-S with more power, improved suspension, brakes and tires will be even better. Its about how cars handle at the limit and how enjoyable they are to drive and this car embodies it all, again from what I hear. I am itching to drive one and anyone who is a true car guy in terms of tracking/canyoning and going around turns should and would appreciate this.

Has no one ever heard of an S2000, a Miata, an Rx-8, or a Genesis coupe? The last 3 which sold new until last year...

RX8 is underrated but suffers from a weak motor. Great chassis, design, weak motor.

S2000 is a great drivers car but not as cheap as this and it's a roadster.

Genesis coupe is the closest thing.

Well true, the BRZ's weakness is similar. Although the RX8 is far prettier.

S2000 has been around is a great car but also suffers from what the BRZ does, lacking power. But a terrific platform, some also dont want a convertible.

RX8 has its fans, some like and some dislike the rotary engine

Genesis is a disappointment from what I hear and is heavier than these

The Miata is great for a track toy, and I mean this in the best way possible but is so feminine for a DD. At least in LA its all the gays drive them (nothing wrong with being gay) but has that vibe in the same way a corvette has its vibe and Ive been passed by plenty of them on the track(miatas).

The BRZ is more rounded, maybe a bit boy racer but seems like the better daily driver than the rest, at least to me.

Also remember that the Rx8 made like 230 hp out of what was a supposed 1.3L motor... although being a rotary it had to be revver to like 9.5K, had almost no TQ and got like 15 MPG if you were lucky. They were also ungodly unreliable...

Valid points but either way I think the BRZ will have a very limited niche crowd that it caters to and because I've named the cars I did, we can't say it has no current competitors. I think most that want a sports car will want above 300 HP and this is why this market is severely limited.

Subaru tuning moves at light-speed compared to some other makes IMHO.
