F1 2012 - Mercedes GP Montreal Qualifying Results: Rosberg and Schumacher Qualify 5th and 9th Respectively

This week F1 returns to North America for the Canadian grand Prix. Sebastian Vettel stormed to pole after the RBR team was forced yet again to modify their car. FIA deemed their wheel hub caps were illegal and had to have their vents block. Mercedes' Nico Rosberg took fifth after sitting out of Free Practice 3 in the morning with a fuel connector problem. Schumacher was on a two lap strategy but with the team mismanaging his release he failed to make his second qualifying lap and had to settle for ninth place. Lewis Hamilton was unable to keep up with Vettel's momentum and could only claim second place. While Alonso and Webber took third and forth respectively.

    For Nico,

“today’s qualifying session went pretty well and P5 is a good starting position to gain a strong result here in Montreal. I can still hope for a podium finish tomorrow as we have worked very hard on our race pace over the weekend. That’s why I feel quite positive because the race will depend on good tyre management as the key factor.”

Michael Schumacher had this to say:

“Well, this certainly was not how we had planned our qualifying to be today. Our calculation for Q3 was to go for two laps and attack on the second one after we had seen at the beginning of Q3 that one lap did not work properly. I don't really know how we managed not to make it over the line early enough to start the second lap but, when I passed the line, the team told me it was too late. We could not have achieved pole today as we could not do the times the guys up front were doing, but I could most likely have been able to do the time I was doing earlier in qualifying and start the race from a bit a better position. I now have to take it how it is and make the attack in the race tomorrow that I could not do today.”

Ross Brawn after the session said:

“As we are getting used to this year, it was an extremely close session and warming up the tyres in the right way was a critical factor. In the final part of qualifying, both drivers had two sets of options available and completed a single timed lap on their first run. They felt that the tyres were not quite up to temperature, so Nico opted to do a second one-lap run with a more aggressive out-lap, while Michael chose to do two timed laps, with a slower lap followed by a quicker one. This worked well for Nico, who set his fastest time of the session, but we mismanaged Michael's run and lost too much time while looking for a gap in the traffic. He therefore crossed the line 0.04s after the chequered flag came out, and was unable to complete his final lap - although he had set his best first sector time before he backed off.
This was certainly not a session where we achieved our full potential, but Nico did a strong job to recover from the running time he lost this morning, and we know that, even from fifth and ninth positions, we will still have plenty of opportunities to make progress through the field tomorrow.”
    Norbert felt that we saw

“a good effort from Nico after he had to miss third practice this morning. He and his engineers could not fine-tune the car in the morning session, so fifth place in this competitive field constitutes a good recovery. Michael was in traffic during the out lap of his final qualifying run so he had to build a gap. The chequered flag came out at the very moment Michael crossed the start and finish line, starting what was supposed to be his fastest qualifying lap. The consequence is that he has to start from ninth position. Our long run pace yesterday and this morning looked quite good, so we are hoping for a good race for both of our drivers tomorrow.”

Awesome race today, gratz to Hamilton on the win. Shame Schumacher was forced to retire with a DRS wing problem. His luck has been horrible this year.

Funny to see Ferrari desperately keeping Alonso on track, even though he lost 4 seconds a lap in the last phase of the race.
If he would hav pitted in lap 55 he easily would have been 3dr.
    Great win for Lewis.
7 different drivers win the first 7 races.
    This has never happened before!

    Hey David.

I'm hating this season so far. Because of the tires if you make a little miscalculation in the race strategy, you have no hope. I don't know what Ferrari were thinking, they know better than that. Surprised Grosjean didn't crash into someone this time

Hi Scourge, glad to see you're back Click here to enlarge
Schumi has all the bad luck he can have. Funny to see the DRS is so sturdy they can not qickly disengage it even if the mechanics try to.
Button was not in his element today. I don't know what he was thinking.
Kimi was not in the best of forms eather, so Hamilton winning was the best outcome possible Click here to enlarge
I love the unpredictable finishes so far this season.
Even Massa has found the right way to set up his Ferrari at last Click here to enlarge

yeah it was great seeing Hamilton win. I think right now, Alonso and him are the only real drivers out there that can take a decent car and race the hell out of them.

    @Sticky

typing it up as we speak, just waiting on statements from the Mercedes team.

3 GP2 drivers in the podium, no doubt GP2 is growing some serious talent... Awesome job of Grosjean and Perez, weird you guys dont talk about it. Of course there was the strategy situation from Vettel and Alonso that slowed them down, still Grosjean and Perez did a very very good job, im glad young drivers are starting to step up, I think its worth mentioning and watching throug the rest fo the season.

GP2 has always been the breeding grounds for F1. At the moment their races are more exciting. But I can't stand Grosjean, he is a driving hazard. Perez is a good driver, but still needs to be more consistant. He's shown he can be fast and yet still save his tires, but there are some races where he just disappears.

    Grosjean, what can I say?
It is the second race this season he managed to not collide with another driver and/or take himself out of the race. Is that positive? When he manages to do that he can be quick.
To my surprise yesterday he was quicker then Kimi. Most of the time though he is a loose canon.
Perez drove a solid race yesterday. He has proven to be able to set up the Sauber so it can preserve the tires throughout the race and be quick at the end. He set the fastest laptime in the 66th lap, only to be bettered by Vettel in lap 69. But he is out of the top 10 more then in it. Both drivers were lucky to have 2 team drivers on 2nd and 3rd whos team bosses were undicisive about changing their tires when they should have, or both Grosjean and Perez would have been 4th and 5th.
It was amusing to see that Whitmarsh was so happy that Alonso fell back to 5th Click here to enlarge

What the hell is going on at Mercedes. Schumacher is having so much bad luck, it's hard to believe it's all coincidence. Did someone from the team superglue that wing?? Freaking unbelievable to see such things happen to a great champion Click here to enlarge

No clue man. A lot of the F1 conspiracy folk think that Merc is doing it on purpose by having Schumacher develop the car for Rosberg and let him score the points. I don't really buy it. But it is really strange that all the issues are happening to him. I was hoping he would be back to his old self after seeing how well he did the second part of last season, but the car just doesn't want to cooperate.
