2013 BMW F12 M6 spotted doing final testing with carbon ceramic brakes - End of M brake woes?

Braking has always been a bit of a contentious subject with BMW M. If there was one consistent weak spot in M vehicles it would be the brakes. It is not that they did not perform well as much as that they were rapidly susceptible to fade. For M track junkies, the brakes were almost always the first place to look at upgrading. Well, that is until now. With the new ceramic brake option coming for the F12, as you can see in the photos below, the BMW M Achilles heel is likely gone for good. We just are scared to ask what BMW is going to price this option at.

    $8,300 option.

Not covered under scheduled maintenance. All repairs are out of your pocket.

Also get use to an embarrassing high pitched squeal driving around town. Not a good look in your $120k M6.

The problem wasn't the fact bmw didn't offer ceramic brakes. It was their steel brake setups were pathetic. Now the M5 has huge 400mm two piece rotors, with aluminum hat. With big 6-piston brembo calipers.

And the brakes are still the weak point of the M5 as shown in various tests. I really don't know what's going on there.

Newer generation ceramic brakes don't squeak and they also don't only work when hot like some of the earlier ones, they've really come a long way and BMW's new brakes are considered to be some of the most advanced of all of them.

I didn't know that the brakes aren't covered under maintenance, but it doesn't matter. Do you know how long ceramic brake pads last? You will probably be past the maintenance plan coverage by the time they need to be replaced, anyways.

Not cheap but not terrible either as odd as that sounds for an $8300 option.

Actually, the ROTORS will last "forever" (unless they get shattered by debris or stones. These carbon ceramic rotors are prone to get damaged by projected objets). The pads will still wear, although at a lesser rate.

Agreed, that's almost a bargain for such brakes, compared to prices of the competition.

Yes they do squeal. Just ask the porsche guys switching back to steel brakes. BMW seems to think they can still squeal, they warn about it in their description.

They aren't covered under maintenance, but can last longer. But they are easier to damage. As stated once again by BMW in their description posted below.

You can read below, not exactly a ringing endorsement for the ceramic brake option.

I thought @DD GT3 RD has the steels and they squeeked and he wished he got the ceramics?

Steels are loud. Gt3 was insanely loud. My c63 squeals too but maybe a 1/5 as loud

I went for steel cause I heard it was quieter but then I found out that was on te .1 gt3 and that the carbons on the .2 were quiet. FML!!!!

That's what I thought... so ceramic may be quieter on this?

Ceramics are nice, but like any car they are susceptible to damage if you drop the rotor. Same thing would happen if you dropped a steel rotor lol...

I was able to hold one of the bare carbon rotors off a GT3 running in the ALMS, and it weighs half a pound. I was slicing pieces off it with a razor blade lol

One guy that put them on a 1M paid $30K. What's the point when you are largely on to a new Porsche or M model?

    Not according to bmw.

"Increased low-speed noise including high-pitched squeal is not uncommon in city use."

Also avoid silicon based products, like tire dressing and certain wheel cleaners. Silicon can impregnate the carbon ceramic material.

Just read bmw officially made the ceramic brakes not available until 2013.

Appears to be. I was there two weeks ago for PCD and a 1-day school and they had a ton of 6 series getting ready for something on the track that was definitely not part of the course curriculum. I don't recall them being ///M models. Now I'm kicking myself that I didn't sneak out for a closer look...

$30k is way too much for ceramics...
